That night he took the astronomy notebook to bed twelve and found an old envelope tucked between the pages. It was addressed to DAD, written in Lily's uneven handwriting and decorated with a crooked star. Inside was a single sheet of paper containing a short list: When you are sad, eat a cookie. When you are tired, take a nap. When you are scared, count to ten and remember I love you.

Jack read it three times. Then he folded it carefully and placed it in his jacket pocket, near the place where he kept the photograph of Mara and Lily taken at the county fair. He sat beside the bed and counted slowly to ten, though nothing in the room changed when he reached the end. The act was childish, simple, and completely inadequate to the danger his daughter faced. It was also something she had given him to do, and he decided that mattered.

Claire passed the room later and saw him reading the letter again. He showed it to her without explanation. She smiled at Lily's instructions and told him he might want to follow at least two of them before the next morning. Jack promised to try. For the first time in days, he ate a cookie before returning to the chair.

The second week brought a stretch of weather so bitter that the river near the hospital grew a skin of ice along its edges. In the lobby, volunteers began stacking extra blankets on a rolling cart for families who had arrived without warm clothes. Jack saw a mother carrying a sleeping toddler with one shoe missing and gave her the spare pair of wool socks Rose had packed for him. He told himself he was merely making room in his bag, but Claire noticed the exchange from the coffee stand and understood that doing small useful things had become part of how he managed his fear.

Lily's condition continued to demand difficult decisions. There were encouraging changes on some tests, but the doctors remained concerned about how much strength her heart could regain. Dr. Shaw explained that prolonged support could bring its own complications and that the team was constantly weighing the risks of waiting against the risks of intervening. The conversation was neither a countdown nor a guarantee; it was an attempt to choose the safest next step for a little girl whose body was doing its best to recover.

At a family conference, Jack sat beside Luke and Denise while Claire reviewed the plan for the coming days. They would repeat imaging, monitor organ function, and prepare for another carefully controlled assessment of Lily's cardiac performance if her condition allowed it. The transplant evaluation would continue in parallel so the family would not be forced to begin from zero if recovery stalled. Jack asked each specialist to tell him not only what they planned but what would make them change that plan.
