Daniel finished fastening the section he had promised to complete. He worked carefully, checking each connection and removing the leftover scraps from the ground. He did not speak again unless Catherine asked a question directly related to the job. At five-fifteen he called Noah from the kitchen, thanked Lily for keeping him company, and loaded the truck.

Catherine came to the driveway as he checked the tailgate latch. She was no longer holding her phone. She looked exhausted and almost frightened, but she did not begin with an excuse. "Daniel, I shouldn't have said that."

"No," he said. "You shouldn't."

She looked down. "Richard was trying to provoke me. I let him."

"He didn't put those words in your mouth."

"I know."

For a moment neither spoke. The late sunlight had turned the fresh fence posts warm gold, and Lily's voice could be heard faintly from the house as she said goodbye to Noah. Daniel wanted to leave without making Catherine feel better about what she had done. He had too much respect for both of them to make an apology into an easy transaction.

"I called you because of your work," Catherine said. "You did it well. Everything else you said came from kindness I hadn't earned, and I treated that kindness like an intrusion. I'm sorry."

"I accept that you're sorry," he said carefully. "It still hurt."

"I know."

"And being a handyman isn't something I need you to look past. It's what I do. It's how I pay for my son's school shoes and the roof over his head. It's work I know how to do well."

Catherine met his eyes again. "You're right. I wasn't insulting a misunderstanding. I was insulting something you have every reason to be proud of."

Daniel held the silence long enough for that distinction to matter. Then he nodded toward the unfinished gate hardware. "I'll be here tomorrow morning to complete the work we've agreed on. The hinges need replacing, and the final invoice will reflect the materials we used. After that, if you'd prefer a different contractor for anything else, I can recommend one."

"I don't want a different contractor," Catherine said.

"You don't have to decide that tonight."

He got into his truck, and Noah immediately began describing Lily's latest mathematical concession. Daniel drove home listening, asking the occasional question, while the scene in the driveway replayed at the back of his mind. He had not lost his temper. That did not mean he was unharmed. When Noah went to bed, Daniel sat at the kitchen table with a glass of water and allowed himself to admit that the insult had reached a place he had spent years protecting.

He had heard different versions of it from employers, clients, and relatives who thought a man with a toolbox must have failed at becoming something more. He had heard it while asking for the medical bills to be reconsidered, when a representative spoke to him as if he could not
