"I know that," she said. "I'm not giving you credit that belongs to me. I'm telling you what your being here meant. I spent years confusing being self-sufficient with never letting anyone help. You didn't try to take over. You just stayed close enough that I could remember how to do the hard part myself."

He looked at her, feeling the strange weight of being seen accurately. It was different from being praised for a repair or thanked for finishing early. She knew how much he worried about Noah, how he still carried Sarah's memory, how easily a careless remark could reach the old fear that he was only useful when something was broken. She was not ignoring any of it. She was choosing to remain in the conversation with all of it present.

"I'm not going anywhere," he said. "I told you that."

"I know. I'm telling you the same thing back."

They walked to the front door together. Outside, the air carried the cool scent of damp leaves, and the lights along the drive illuminated the repaired fence at the edge of the yard. Daniel paused on the threshold. Catherine faced him without the guarded expression she'd worn the first day, and for once neither of them reached for a practical question to fill the silence.

"Lily is going to have opinions," Daniel said.

"About everything."

"Noah is going to correct people's math."

"Constantly, apparently. I consider it a feature."

"This won't be simple."

"No," Catherine agreed. "It will be real. That's better."

She took a step closer, and Daniel knew she was giving him time to choose. He reached for her hand first, the same way he had at the kitchen table, and she closed her fingers around his. Then he kissed her gently, without hurry or ceremony, a kiss so careful that it seemed to contain every conversation they had not rushed. She kissed him back without hesitation.

When they separated, Catherine smiled. "That took long enough."

"I told you. Deep, not fast."

"I was ready four days ago."

"I suspected."

She laughed, and he felt the last of his nervousness ease. They stayed at the doorway another moment, then Daniel went inside to wake Noah. Catherine watched them leave, standing beneath the porch light with a hand resting against the doorframe. She did not look at her phone until the truck had disappeared down the drive, and when she did, it was only to silence a reminder she no longer needed.

The board's reconciliation meeting took place the following week. Catherine entered with her attorneys, a complete financial presentation, and a list of conditions she considered necessary for the company to retain her confidence. The board agreed to establish clearer oversight for the restructuring committee and to review its evaluation of the contracts it had proposed cutting. Two directors stepped down from their committee positions, and one acknowledged privately that the process had become more about internal control than the company's long-term performance.
