Afterward, Lily received compliments from her teacher and several parents. Catherine listened without interrupting, her phone still in her bag. Daniel watched mother and daughter stand together under the fluorescent lights, the girl's excitement filling the space between them. He knew a company might be lost or saved, but this evening could not be rescheduled for later. It existed only because Catherine had come.

They returned to the house shortly after nine. Noah fell asleep on the couch under a knitted blanket Lily retrieved from the hall closet. Catherine made tea, putting two mugs on the table without asking whether Daniel wanted one. Lily carried her notes upstairs, pausing at the doorway to thank everyone for coming. She looked toward Daniel and Noah as she said it, and Daniel answered with the plain truth: she had done something worth being proud of.

The house grew quiet. Daniel sat at Catherine's kitchen table with the warmth of the tea moving slowly through his hands. He could not remember the last time he had felt comfortable remaining in someone else's home after the practical reason for being there had ended. Catherine sat across from him and looked toward the hallway where Lily had disappeared.

"She added the fence line after Saturday," Catherine said. "I saw it in her notebook. She told me she'd been thinking about something you said while you were fixing the old posts."

"She did the research. I didn't write her presentation."

"I know. But she needed someone who would take her questions seriously."

Daniel looked down at the tea. "She's an impressive kid."

"She is." Catherine's voice softened. "Richard called this afternoon."

He looked up. "How did it go?"

"He withdrew the temporary custody petition. His attorney sent the formal notice, and Richard called Lily himself. They talked for forty-five minutes. No calendar, no scheduled check-in, no lawyer on the line."

"That's good."

"I heard her laughing through the door. I haven't heard her laugh with him that way in a long time."

Catherine turned her mug slowly on the table. "She asked me whether I knew he'd called you. I told her I did. She said she'd been afraid you were another adult trying to decide her life without her. But when you spoke to Richard, you told him to ask her instead."

"I tried not to speak for her."

"You told him she wanted her father."

"I told him she wanted to be heard. That's something she told me."

Catherine watched him. "I've spent years arguing with Richard through attorneys because speaking directly always ended in a fight. You had one call with him, and he withdrew a petition that terrified our daughter."

"It wasn't one call," Daniel said. "It was Lily telling you the truth. It was you deciding to hear it. It was Richard hearing a little of it himself and making a different choice. I was one conversation in the middle."

"You do that," she said. "Step away from the center of things even when you helped make them happen."
