When the world begins recognizing your title, remember who you were when nobody thought you had one.

N.S.R.

Ryan read it twice.

Then looked up.

Nathaniel was watching him.

“You like envelopes too much.”

“Old people need hobbies.”

Ryan slipped the card into his jacket pocket.

“I still have the first one.”

“The one to Victor?”

“A photocopy.”

“Why?”

Ryan shrugged.

“Reminder.”

“Of what?”

“That I almost didn’t send the email.”

Nathaniel nodded.

“Courage usually feels less impressive from inside.”

Ryan looked toward the showroom.

“Do you ever think about that day?”

“Sometimes.”

“You were angry.”

“Yes.”

“You didn’t look angry.”

“That’s because I’ve had practice.”

“Would you do it again?”

Nathaniel considered.

“No.”

Ryan seemed surprised.

“Why not?”

“I already learned what I needed.”

He looked through the glass at Prestige.

“And I don’t believe leaders should routinely subject themselves to mistreatment just to prove mistreatment exists.”

“What would you do instead?”

“Better systems.”

Nathaniel counted on his fingers.

“Mystery shoppers.”

“Complaint review.”

“Employee reporting.”

“Data.”

“Independent audits.”

Ryan nodded.

“Less dramatic.”

“Much.”

“Better?”

“Yes.”

Nathaniel looked at him.

“The goal isn’t to catch people being bad.”

“What is it?”

“To build a company where being good is easier.”

Ryan thought about that.

Inside, a young salesperson greeted a man who had just entered wearing paint-stained work clothes.

No hesitation.

No smirk.

“Good evening, sir. What can I show you?”

The man pointed toward a BMW.

They walked together.

Nathaniel watched.

“That,” he said.

Ryan followed his gaze.

“Pretty ordinary.”

“Exactly.”

Nathaniel got into the Ford.

The engine started with a low mechanical rumble.

Ryan walked closer.

“Wait.”

Nathaniel lowered the window.

“You never bought the Aurelian.”

Nathaniel smiled.

“No.”

“You came in asking for the most expensive car.”

“Yes.”

“You didn’t want it?”

“Oh, I wanted it.”

“Then why didn’t you buy it?”

Nathaniel looked toward the showroom.

“Because after that day, I didn’t want my purchase becoming the story.”

Ryan laughed.

“Still want one?”

Nathaniel considered.

“Maybe.”

“We sold that one.”

“I know.”

“New version comes next spring.”

“I know.”

Ryan leaned toward the window.

“Would you like me to put your name on the list?”

Nathaniel smiled.

“What’s the deposit?”

Ryan stared at him.

Then both men laughed.

“Nothing to hear the engine.”

“Good policy.”

Nathaniel drove away.

Prestige Auto Gallery continued operating under Valorian Holdings.

Revenue did not collapse because employees stopped prejudging customers.

It rose.

Not dramatically.

Not magically.

Consistently.

Walk-in conversion improved.
