“You knew his name?”

“He didn’t give it.”

“Why didn’t you ask?”

“I did.”

“What did he say?”

“That it wasn’t time for names.”

Victor cursed under his breath.

He grabbed the office phone.

“Chloe. Get in here.”

She arrived quickly.

“What happened?”

Victor handed her the letter.

She read.

The color left her face.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“That old man?”

“Yes.”

“Rutherford?”

Victor pointed at the computer.

Chloe stared at the photograph.

“Oh my God.”

Steve was called in next.

Then both security officers.

Five adults stood in Victor’s office while the implications expanded.

Ben whispered:

“I told him to sit outside.”

Chloe turned.

“You did what?”

“You laughed too.”

“I didn’t tell him to sit outside.”

Steve muttered:

“I said he looked like he came off the subway.”

Victor rubbed both hands over his face.

“Stop.”

Everyone went quiet.

“Stop talking.”

He looked at the letter again.

Preserve footage.

That line frightened him most.

Chloe said:

“What do we do?”

Victor stared.

Then his managerial instincts returned.

Not moral clarity.

Damage control.

“He hasn’t fired anyone.”

“Yet.”

“He hasn’t contacted HR.”

“We don’t know that.”

Victor looked at Ryan.

“You.”

Ryan stiffened.

“What exactly did he say to you?”

“Only what I told you.”

“Did you say anything about us?”

“No.”

“Did you criticize management?”

“No.”

Victor stared.

Ryan stared back.

Finally Victor said:

“Go.”

Ryan left.

But the door did not close completely.

Victor did not notice.

Ryan walked three steps.

Stopped.

He could still hear.

Chloe’s voice:

“What are we supposed to say tomorrow?”

Victor answered:

“The truth selectively.”

Ryan frowned.

Steve said:

“What does that mean?”

“It means nobody admits discrimination.”

“No one said discrimination.”

“Good. Keep it that way.”

Chloe:

“But we mocked him.”

Victor:

“You misread a walk-in.”

Steve:

“Security blocked him.”

Victor:

“Security followed access-control procedure.”

Ben:

“There isn’t a procedure saying customers need designer clothes.”

Victor:

“Then don’t phrase it like that.”

A pause.

Victor continued:

“If necessary, we say there was uncertainty over identity and purchase intent.”

Chloe:

“But we never asked his name.”

Victor:

“Then there was uncertainty because he refused to identify himself.”

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

That was technically true only after the mistreatment.

Not before.
