Margaret sat down slowly beside him, folding her hands in her lap. “You remember her father?” she asked. Walt turned to look at her. “Can’t say I ever met him.” “I only met him a handful of times myself,” Margaret said, picking her up from the library years back. “Quiet man, polite, never talked about himself either.” She paused, something tugging gently at her memory. “There was a strength to him, though, the kind you could feel standing next to him, even when he wasn’t saying a word.” “Sounds familiar,” Walt said, glancing toward the storage closet. “I always wondered what happened to him,” Margaret continued. “One year, she just stopped coming around as much. Then she showed up here two years ago, working at the community center, never once mentioning where she’d been. All I know now is he’s not well these days. She mentioned it earlier in passing. Somebody named Marcus looks in on him some evenings so she can work.”

Walt sat with that for a long moment. The pieces settling into place the unhurried way they always had for him. One small careful detail at a time. “People don’t disappear from a life they were proud of,” he said finally. “They disappear from one that cost them something.” Margaret reached over and squeezed his hand. “You think she’s hiding something?” “I think,” Walt said slowly, “that whatever she’s carrying, it’s not a secret because she’s ashamed of it. It’s a secret because it’s heavy and she’s decided not to hand that weight to anybody else.”

Across the gym, unaware she was even being discussed, Emily stacked the last of the folding tables against the wall and wiped her hands on her apron. She checked her watch. A small worn thing with a cracked leather band. And something in her expression tightened just for a second, like she was thinking about somewhere else she needed to be. Somewhere that mattered more to her than any of this. Nobody noticed. Nobody but Walt, who noticed most things, and who was starting to understand that Cedar Falls was about to learn a lesson it hadn’t asked for.

There’s a kind of wisdom that only comes with age. The kind that teaches you to look past the loudest voice in the room and pay attention instead to the ones who never raise theirs at all. Walt had spent thirty-one years learning that lesson the hard way, and he wasn’t about to forget it now, not even at a Saturday night charity gala full of pie and raffle tickets. The night was still young. It was about to get a lot louder.
