Nearby, Grant Wexler had lifted his camera instinctively the second Emily crossed the floor, catching the whole exchange on tape without fully understanding yet what he’d captured. Derek Vance stood frozen for exactly as long as it took his pride to catch up with what had just happened. Then his face flushed red and something ugly moved behind his eyes. “What,” he said, his voice tight, “do you think you’re doing?” Emily rose slowly, keeping her body between Derek and Walt, though her voice stayed level. “He was in pain,” she said simply. “You held that lock too long.” “I know what I’m doing,” Derek snapped, loud enough now that the microphone clipped to his collar carried every word through the speakers. “I’m a certified instructor. I have actual training. What exactly gives you the right to put your hands on me in front of my own demonstration?”

The room had gone very still. Two hundred faces all turned toward the mat, all waiting. “I wasn’t trying to embarrass you,” Emily said quietly. “I was trying to help him.” “You grabbed my wrist,” Derek said, his voice rising further, playing now not to Emily, but to the crowd, sensing an opportunity to salvage the moment by turning it into something else entirely in front of two hundred people. “Like you know what you’re doing, like you’ve got some kind of training.” He laughed a short humorless sound and turned to face the audience fully. “You want to know something funny?” he said. “This isn’t the first time tonight she’s tried to correct me. Earlier, she told me my technique was wrong. Gave me some little lecture about joint pressure, like she’s some kind of expert.” A murmur moved through the crowd. A few people who’d witnessed the earlier exchange nodded, remembering.

“I’ll be honest with you all,” Derek continued, his confidence rebuilding with every word feeding off the attention. “I don’t know what her deal is, but I’ve been doing this a long time. Trained fighters, real ones, competition level. And I can tell you right now, whatever she thinks she knows, whatever she’s pretending to be, it’s not real.” He turned back to Emily, pointing directly at her now, his voice sharp enough to cut through the entire gymnasium. “You want to stand up here and act like some kind of expert in front of my class? Fine, let’s be honest with these people. You’re a fake. You’ve never trained a day in your life. You just got lucky grabbing my wrist because I wasn’t paying attention to you.”

The word landed hard. Fake. It hung in the air of that gymnasium, echoing off the high ceiling, settling over two hundred people who’d come tonight expecting pie and raffle tickets and a nice evening for a good cause, and had instead found themselves in the middle of something else entirely. Somewhere in the crowd, a few people exchanged uncertain glances. Others simply stared, unsure whether to feel sympathy or suspicion, the way a room does when it hasn’t decided yet who to believe. That uncertainty, more than anything Derek said, was the cruelest part. It wasn’t that everyone turned against her. It was that nobody quite knew whether to stand up for her either. And silence, when it stretches long enough, can feel exactly like judgment.
