He turned fast and grabbed Walt Higgins by the collar of his flannel shirt, yanking him forward, off balance, his already injured shoulder wrenching hard in the process. Walt cried out. A short sharp sound of real pain. Stumbling as Derek shoved him back toward the mat. “Let’s see how tough this town’s heroes really are,” Derek snapped, shoving Walt down onto one knee, his grip tightening around the collar. Rougher now, careless. The practiced showman entirely gone, replaced by something raw and ugly and out of control. Grant Wexler’s camera was rolling, capturing every second of it, live streaming straight into the evening broadcast feed without anyone in the control room even having time to cut away.

Two hundred people rose halfway out of their seats at once. A wave of gasps and shouted protest rolling through the gymnasium. “Derek, stop!” Pauline shouted from the stage, her voice cracking with fear. Margaret lunged forward instinctively, though she was nowhere near fast enough to reach her husband in time. But Emily already was. She crossed the gymnasium floor the way water finds the fastest path downhill. Without hesitation, without wasted motion, arriving at the mat before most people in that room had even fully processed what they were seeing. Derek saw her coming, some instinct finally warning him a half second too late, and turned to face her, still gripping Walt’s collar, his expression twisted somewhere between rage and fear. “Stay out of this,” he snarled. “Let him go,” Emily said. And this time, there was nothing quiet about her voice at all.

He didn’t let go. Instead, still riding the last wave of his own unraveling pride, he swung his free hand toward her, a clumsy, desperate motion more panic than technique. What happened next took two seconds. Later, when people tried to describe it to friends who hadn’t been there, most of them struggled to find the right words. It didn’t look like a fight. It didn’t look like violence at all. It looked closer to something choreographed, something rehearsed a thousand times over until every wasted motion had been trained out of it completely.

Emily’s left hand caught his wrist mid-swing, redirecting the momentum with barely any effort at all, using his own force against him, the way water uses a riverbank to change direction rather than fight it. Her right hand found his shoulder, controlling the angle instantly, and her hip dropped low and turned. A motion so practiced it looked almost gentle, almost unremarkable. Right up until Derek Vance was suddenly no longer standing. He hit the mat flat on his back. All the air driven from his lungs in a single sharp gasp, his own grip on Walt’s collar released the instant his balance broke. Emily’s knee settled lightly across his forearm, pinning it without crushing it, her other hand resting open-palmed against his chest, holding him down with almost no visible effort at all. Two seconds. That’s all it took.
