Chapter 3

It was an older model Porsche Cayenne, and we got a fantastic deal on it, which was the only reason we even had a Porsche.

She had done all sorts of things to make the car as nice as she wanted. It was in a lot of her Instagram posts, too.

She was the only one who used it, but I paid for the car, its maintenance, and the changes she had made to it. It was under my name.

According to the terms of the prenup, it was mine to do with as I pleased.

If the divorce had happened under any other circumstances, I would have just let her have it. But I was not feeling very generous toward her.

First, there was the cheating. Then she tried to weasel her way out of an agreement we had both made together.

She did not deserve any kindness from me.

I still remember the look on her face when I said I wanted to keep the car. She could not believe it.

That was enough for me to know I was making the right choice.

She deserved to know what it felt like to lose something you loved.

She fought hard to keep it. They tried every excuse.

They said it was going to be her only source of income after the divorce. They claimed she wanted to use it for ride-sharing until she got a job.

My lawyer pointed out that the prenup awarded her a sum of money for exactly that reason. It was supposed to provide her enough support for a few months. After that, she was on her own.

Even that felt like more than she deserved, but the prenup would have been thrown out if she got nothing. Paying her that money was a small sacrifice to get a bigger win.

They tried sentimental attachment, but that was an even weaker excuse.

In the end, they said I was just trying to be vindictive. The judge said that it did not really matter. The prenup gave me ownership of it, and I could do whatever I wanted with it.

That seemed to bother her more than the divorce, honestly.

It did not really surprise me. For all her talk of wanting to get back together and try to fix things, I knew she was already over the relationship. She was just hanging on because I was her sole source of income.

If she had done the right thing and told me she wanted a divorce without cheating on me, then she would at least have had Luke. I probably would have left her the car, too.

Instead, she wanted to have her cake and eat it, too.

Now, she had no job, no car, and had to live with a mom who did not want her around.

She was not afraid to let me know just how miserable she was.

She actually harassed me over the phone after it was decided that I would keep the car. I answered the first call, thinking it was something important. She threw a barrage of insults at me instead. She called me names and even a few hateful things because I took the car.

I did not bother arguing with her. She was not thinking straight. I honestly thought she was drunk.

But she kept calling.

She called me dozens of times over the next two days and sent me several messages. I ignored all of them, but I did not block her. I wanted to have a record of her harassment in case things got out of hand.

Things did not really escalate much, but they ended when she threatened to have the car stolen and I went to the police.

I showed them a record of the harassment, including her threat. They did not do anything about it, though. They said she was just a bitter ex-wife and she was not going to follow through.

It was annoying to have my concerns dismissed like that. If I were the one making threats and she went to the police, I would be arrested within the hour. But she was just a harmless ex-wife.

It was not completely useless, though.

There was an official record of the complaint, and when I told her about it, the harassment stopped. I did not hear from her at all after that.

The next call came from her sister. She sounded frustrated, but she did not seem to be angry at me. She said she knew it was a long shot, but she asked if there was any chance Dora and I could work things out.

She did not push when I told her I had moved on already.

She just told me what was going on with her sister.

I do not think she really cared about updating me on Dora’s life. It was more like she was tired of her and wanted to vent.

She told me Dora moved out of her mom’s place after a fight and moved in with her a little later.

Dora got along better with her sister, but her sister lived even farther out than her mom did. Dora basically had to leave all of her friends behind just to move in with her.

As a result, Dora was lonely and miserable. She spent most of her time moping around at home or using her sister’s car to do deliveries while she looked for work.

I do not feel bad for her, but I was pretty disappointed at how far she had fallen.

We were building up a great life together, and now she was starting all over because she could not stay faithful.

I did not hear anything about Dora after the call with her sister. I was glad to keep it that way.

I am not exaggerating when I say the image of her and Luke haunted me for months. That is not something you forget easily.

Moving on has been surprisingly easy. There was not much left in the house to remind me of her. She took everything that was hers when she left.

If there was anything that reminded me too much of her, like the couch or the table centerpiece she loved, then I just sold it.

Call me petty, but it was pretty satisfying to sell the SUV.

I did not need it after all. It just felt nice not to let her have it. She did not deserve a prize for cheating on me and blowing up our marriage.

It honestly just feels like one bad decision on her part snowballed into twenty worse ones.

If she was unhappy and wanted out of the marriage, she could have just left.

Instead, she cheated, got caught, tried to get out of the prenup she willingly signed, and then seemed genuinely surprised that none of that worked in her favor.
