Warren started to interrupt, but Eleanor raised one hand and he stopped. She looked at the broken credential in Daniel's palm. She looked at the steel bin, then at the guards who had surrounded him, and her face went colder than the marble beneath their feet. "You destroyed a valid badge in front of the entire staff," she said. "And you called the police."

"I didn't know who he was," Warren protested.

"Because you never asked," Eleanor replied.

Daniel took a step forward. "You asked what I was," he said to Warren. "A delivery man. A janitor. Someone who should enter by the service door. You never asked my name because you had already decided the only answer you would accept."

For the first time, Warren looked around the room and found nobody eager to back him. Even the people who depended on his approval seemed reluctant to meet his eyes. The silence was not solidarity yet, and Daniel knew that, but it was the first fracture in a habit of public agreement. Warren tried another explanation, called it a misunderstanding, and said he had simply acted out of an abundance of caution.

"Then why did you override a verified credential?" Rory asked.

Warren opened his mouth, hesitated, and finally pointed at Daniel's clothing as though that could answer the question for him. A young employee near the coffee cart shook his head openly. Another whispered that the whole incident had been recorded. Warren's gaze moved toward the black domes of the lobby cameras, and Daniel saw him remember his own boast about crystal-clear audio.

Rory stepped forward with the folder. At 8:59, she broke the red seal on the transaction packet, a dry snap that seemed unusually loud in the silent lobby.

"Perhaps I can clarify the situation for everyone," she said. "At 7:30 this morning, Carter Meridian Holdings completed the purchase of fifty-four percent of Summit Dynamics' outstanding voting shares. Mr. Daniel Carter is the founder and controlling owner of Carter Meridian. Under the nomination agreement executed by the board, he is scheduled to assume the position of executive chairman at nine o'clock."

The lobby seemed to contract around her words. The company Warren had called his building was now controlled by the Black man whose badge he had broken. The person he had attempted to send to a service entrance was the person whose investment had rescued Summit from a dangerous financial position. Daniel did not smile at the revelation, because the lesson would have been worthless if everyone took away only that they had insulted a wealthy man.

Warren looked from Rory to Eleanor and back again. "Nobody told me it was him," he said. "I knew a new shareholder was coming, but I wasn't told... I wasn't told..."

"Told what?" Daniel asked.

Warren swallowed. He could not complete the sentence without confirming what everyone had already heard. "If I'd known who you were," he managed, "I never would have treated you that way."

"So you would have treated someone without my money that way instead?"

The question left Warren with nowhere comfortable to stand. He tried an apology, hurried and thin, the sort of apology designed to make the uncomfortable moment disappear without addressing what had created it. Daniel neither accepted nor rejected it. He asked Therese to preserve the recordings, the access history, and any relevant communications, and she told him she had already locked the footage at 8:54.
