"You can't do this," Elliot whispered. Then his voice broke into a shout. "I built this place from nothing. I made you all rich."

"You built something important," Vivian replied. "Then you treated every person who disagreed with you as an enemy. The board cannot let that continue." She spoke without triumph, because the removal of a founder was not a victory for the employees whose jobs remained uncertain. Elliot demanded his attorney, and counsel told him he was entitled to representation and would receive the formal corporate resolutions. He was not under arrest, but he was no longer authorized to direct employees, access systems, or execute transactions on the company's behalf.

A security supervisor arrived with Darius Cole, who had been temporarily recalled at independent counsel's request as a witness and a trained member of the security team. Darius wore his uniform but no longer carried the uncertainty he had shown on Tuesday. He did not approach Elliot with force or mock the change in their positions. He simply stood beside the door while the supervisor explained that Elliot needed to accompany them to collect his personal belongings under observation. The former CEO looked at Darius as though the sight were an insult he could scarcely tolerate.

"You?" Elliot said. "After everything I did for you, you stand there like you're better than me?"

"I don't think I'm better than you," Darius answered. "I think I'm responsible for what I do, even when someone important gives me an order. I should have remembered that earlier." Elliot told him he was only a security guard and would never be anything more. Darius did not argue about titles. He opened the door and waited, letting the man's own words settle in a room where no one was willing to rescue him from them.

They descended through the executive corridor and into the elevator. Graham remained upstairs to organize the emergency finance plan, while Mariah and Nadine followed at a distance after receiving permission from the board chair. In the lobby, employees stopped at their desks and looked up as Elliot approached with security. Some phones lifted, but Darius instructed the staff to maintain order and respect privacy rather than create another public spectacle. Mariah watched the man who had ordered her removed pass through the same area, now stripped not of his dignity but of the authority he had misused.

At the front doors, Elliot turned back toward her. The hatred in his expression was unmistakable, but Mariah no longer felt the need to answer it with anger. The board had removed him because of the evidence and the obligations of his office, not because she had insisted on an act of revenge. Darius held the glass door open and escorted the former CEO outside with another guard. Beyond the entrance, investigators and company counsel would have questions that could take months or years to resolve, and no one in the lobby could know how those processes would end.
