proved that the respect she had been denied was available all along. They simply had not believed she deserved it until they learned how much money she controlled. She straightened the cuff of her jacket, collected her portfolio, and looked at Elliot as if he were a stranger she had just discovered in an unsafe business.

"The problem wasn't the appointment system," she told him. "The problem was that you never considered asking who I was."

Graham stopped a few feet from her, breathless and pale. He apologized in a hurried string of sentences, explaining that the appointment had been kept off the visitor calendar because of market sensitivity and the need to control premature disclosures. He had believed his office had arranged a discreet arrival procedure; he had never imagined that discretion would leave the investor unrecognized in the public lobby. Darius stepped away and offered Mariah a quiet apology of his own. Mariah accepted neither apology as an explanation for the way Elliot had spoken to her, though she thanked Darius for releasing her arm.

Graham held a stack of documents against his chest, Elliot stared at his reflection in the polished walls, and Mariah watched the floor numbers rise while she controlled the anger beating against her ribs. She did not enjoy being composed. She would have liked to tell Elliot exactly what his insult had cost her, not in dollars but in the old accumulation of humiliation he could not see. Instead, she concentrated on the people who would be affected by the financing and on the questions she had come to ask before the entire day had gone wrong.

The executive boardroom overlooked the river. Awards lined one wall, a display of hospital partnerships filled another, and the conference table was so long that a person seated at one end could barely recognize the expressions of people at the other. Vivian Stokes, the board chair, rose to greet Mariah with
