The statement infuriated him precisely because it was measured. Elliot had begun speaking for an audience, and now backing down would require admitting that he had made an assumption in front of people whose obedience he expected. He pointed at Darius, who was already approaching. "Remove her," Elliot ordered. "She's creating a disturbance, and if she refuses, call the police."

Darius stopped at a respectful distance. "Ma'am, would you please come over to the security desk while we verify this?" He tried to keep his voice low, hoping to give the CEO a way to reverse the order without further embarrassment. Mariah asked whether he could telephone Graham instead, and Darius started to answer. Elliot cut across both of them, calling her a security threat and demanding that she be taken outside immediately.

"She's identified herself and asked us to confirm an appointment," Darius said, carefully, without turning from Mariah. It was as close to contradicting the CEO as he had allowed himself in fifteen years at the company. Elliot's face hardened. "Cole, I gave you an instruction," he replied, loud enough for everyone to hear. "Don't make me repeat it."

Darius placed his hand lightly on Mariah's forearm. She looked down at the contact and then up into his eyes, seeing the reluctance there. "I won't resist you," she said quietly. Paige stared at her keyboard; a junior accountant held his phone awkwardly at chest height; two women from human resources exchanged alarmed glances without moving. Elliot kept speaking about trespassing and security protocols as if repetition could turn an unsupported accusation into a fact. Mariah walked slowly, keeping her gaze straight ahead, refusing to offer him the spectacle of panic he seemed to want. At the glass doors, she stopped and repeated the one instruction that could still have spared everyone what followed.

"Call Graham Whitlock."

The executive elevator chimed again. Graham came through the opening in a rush, carrying a folder that slipped against his chest as he tried to turn the corner. He took in the scene in one glance: Elliot gesturing, employees crowded around the lobby, Darius holding Mariah beside the doors. For an instant his face seemed to drain of all expression. Then he shouted loudly enough to stop people on the mezzanine above them.

"Let her go. That is Dr. Mariah Bellamy. She's our investor. She's the woman who's here about the three hundred and forty million dollars."

It was not the size of the number that changed Mariah's expression. It was the sudden release of Darius's hand, the way Elliot stepped backward, and the way every face in the lobby rearranged itself from suspicion to alarm. The transformation was instantaneous and humiliating in a new way, because it
