He saw the credential.

“Oh, God.”

Lila’s camera captured everything.

Harlan looked at Derek’s shaking hand.

“Read it.”

Derek did not respond.

Harlan repeated:

“Read it.”

“Federal Bureau of Investigation.”

Derek’s voice had lost its edge.

“Louder.”

Derek looked at the crowd.

Then back at Harlan.

“Retired Federal Bureau of Investigation.”

“And the name?”

“Harlan Whitaker.”

“And rank?”

Derek swallowed.

“Former Special Agent in Charge.”

Harlan held out his hand.

Derek returned the wallet.

Harlan placed it back inside his jacket.

Then looked at him for several long seconds.

“I want to make something very clear.”

Derek started:

“Sir, I didn’t know—”

“That is exactly the problem.”

Derek stopped.

Harlan continued.

“You did not know I was federal.”

“You thought I was an old Black man in a wheelchair.”

“You believed that meant there would be no consequence for humiliating me.”

Derek’s face tightened.

“That isn’t what happened.”

“Your rookie watched it happen.”

Caleb looked down.

“Half the block watched it happen.”

Lila raised the phone.

“And at least one camera watched it happen.”

Derek turned toward her.

“Put that away.”

Harlan’s voice cut across the street.

“Do not tell her to stop recording.”

Derek looked back at him.

Harlan continued.

“She is standing on a public sidewalk.”

Derek’s hands opened and closed.

“You don’t understand.”

“I understand perfectly.”

He pointed toward the shattered honey jar.

“I was crossing a street.”

“You turned an inconvenience into a confrontation.”

“You invented resistance when none existed.”

“You threatened to manufacture an assault charge after you put your hands on me.”

Derek shook his head.

“I said you were under arrest because you wouldn’t follow instructions.”

“No.”

“You said assaulting an officer.”

Derek’s eyes darted toward Lila’s phone.

Harlan saw it.

“So now you remember the camera.”

Derek whispered:

“This can be handled.”

Harlan’s expression did not change.

“No.”

“Agent Whitaker—”

“Mr. Whitaker is sufficient.”

Derek took a step closer.

Harlan’s eyes narrowed.

“Stay where you are.”

Derek stopped instantly.

The crowd noticed.

For the first time, the police officer was the one complying.

Harlan turned toward Caleb.

“What is your name?”

“Caleb Voss, sir.”

“You witnessed the encounter?”

Caleb’s mouth went dry.

“Yes.”

“From the beginning?”

“Yes.”

“Did I strike Officer Langford?”

Caleb looked toward Derek.

Derek stared back.

The answer felt like a career choice.

Caleb swallowed.

“No, sir.”

Derek’s face changed.

“Caleb.”

The rookie continued.

“You did not touch him.”

Harlan nodded once.

“Thank you.”

Then:

“Radio your watch commander.”

Derek snapped:

“You do not give orders to my trainee.”

Chief Thorpe’s name had not even been mentioned yet, but Caleb reached for his radio.

Derek moved toward him.

“Put that down.”
