"Officer," she said, "please tell me the reason I'm being detained, and please give me back my documents."

"You're not in charge here."

He reached for her wrist. The contact was sudden enough that she flinched. His grip was not crushing, but it was firm and unnecessary. He turned her slightly toward the side of the minivan, forcing her shoulder near the door frame. From inside, Zoe gave a sharp cry, then began sobbing. Marcus tried to calm her, putting one arm around her shoulders while Lily searched in her bag for a tissue.

"Don't fight me," Hughes said.

"I'm not fighting you. Let go of my arm."

"You can stop resisting any time you like."

The accusation startled her more than the contact. She had kept her hands open. She had not pulled away. Hughes was supplying a description of her behavior that did not match what was happening, and he was doing it loud enough for dispatch and the witnesses to hear. Gloria realized that if the cameras were not there, somebody might believe him.

"She isn't resisting," Tyrone called. "I've got it on video."

"Mind your business," Hughes barked without turning. "Or I'll make it your business."

The station's automatic door opened. A customer stood with a plastic shopping bag hanging from one hand, saw the scene, and retreated inside. Gloria wondered how many people had watched an encounter like this and later told themselves they had not known what to do. She was not angry with the frightened customer. She was frightened herself.

A silver sedan pulled near the curb, and Amanda Moore stepped out. Amanda was Lily's mother and a family-law attorney. She had planned to stop at her office before meeting the team, but Lily had texted her a single sentence: A POLICE MAN IS YELLING AT ZOE'S MOM. Amanda crossed the lot briskly, stopping well outside Hughes's reach.

"Officer, I'm an attorney," she said. "What legal basis do you have for detaining Ms. Sanders?"

"This doesn't concern you."

"It concerns me because my daughter is in that vehicle. I'm asking for the grounds of this detention."
