In the evening, the three members of the Sanders family ate takeout at the kitchen table, although none of them had much appetite. Vincent had answered work calls until nearly seven, then turned his phone facedown. Gloria had washed her hands three times after coming home, as though there were something on her skin she could remove. Every time she closed her eyes she saw the handcuffs leaving Hughes's belt.

After Zoe finally went upstairs, Gloria asked the question she had been holding since the parking lot. "Why did you wait?"

Vincent sat opposite her. He knew immediately what she meant. "I was recording. I was trying not to make the encounter about my rank."

"He was grabbing me, Vincent. Our daughter was screaming."

"I know."

"You could have stopped it earlier."

He did not defend himself immediately. That was one of the things she had loved about him when they were young, and one of the things that sometimes infuriated her now: he thought before he answered, even when she wanted an instinctive response. His face was drawn in a way she had not seen since the long night Zoe was born.

"You're right," he said. "I should have intervened sooner. I saw what he was doing, and part of me was thinking about the investigation instead of the danger right in front of me. I'm sorry."

It was the answer she needed and not the one that could undo the afternoon. Gloria rested her hands on the table. The silver bracelet was still on her wrist. Above it, a faint red mark had appeared where Hughes had gripped her.

"I know you have a department to fix," she said. "But I didn't marry the department."

"I know that, too."

They sat in silence until Vincent crossed to her side of the table and put his arms around her. She let herself lean into him. For several minutes neither spoke. There was nothing procedural to discuss, nothing either of them could solve with an email, and no way to make their daughter unhear the threats.

On Sunday, a short video of the stop appeared online. Jennifer had shared her footage with Gloria and an attorney first, but somebody who had watched from the store had posted a thirty-second clip. It began with Hughes saying, "You people are always hiding something," and ended with Vincent showing his credential. The recording spread through neighborhood groups with captions that seemed to have been written by people who had watched entirely different events. Some viewers called it proof of racial profiling. Others claimed Vincent had deliberately staged a confrontation to embarrass one of his own officers.

A comment under one post read, WHY DID THE CHIEF WAIT TO TELL HIM WHO HE WAS? Another asked why Gloria had not simply opened the trunk. A third insisted she must have done something before the video started. Gloria read the comments until she felt nauseated, then closed her phone. She realized strangers were demanding that she justify everything she had done while the man who detained her was being offered explanations nobody had proved.
