"I plan to."

Marcus arrived with the yellow legal pad under his arm and his phone in his coat pocket. Benton met him in a small interview room away from the security offices. Before they began, she explained that she needed him to separate what he saw from what he assumed.

Marcus nodded. "That's how I wrote it."

He placed the pad on the table. Benton looked at the first entry.

"8:19. What happened at that time?"

"I heard Judge Williams ask whether she was free to leave."

"You knew she was a judge then?"

"No."

"What did you know?"

"That she was a woman having a dispute with a security officer."

"Anything else?"

"No."

Marcus continued. "Officer Reed told her she was not free to leave. She said that meant she was being detained. He took her into the restricted corridor."

"Did she resist?"

"I saw no resistance."

"Did she raise her voice?"

"Not from where I was standing."

"Did she attempt to push past him?"

"No."

Benton looked up. "You're certain?"

"I'm certain about what I saw. She walked with him."

Marcus turned the legal pad toward her. The next line showed that Maya had entered the restricted security area without visible resistance. Benton compared the note to Reed's report: Subject attempted to push past security personnel.

She said nothing and moved to the next entry.

"You wrote that Officer Reed had a baton."

"Yes."

"How was he using it?"

"I saw him come out of the room holding it. Earlier, from the hallway, I could see it positioned across the doorway."

"Did you see him strike Judge Williams?"

"No."

"Did you see Judge Williams touch him?"

"No."

"Did you hear any physical struggle?"

"No."

Marcus kept his answers precise. Benton noticed that he never tried to strengthen his account beyond what he could support. That made the details he did provide more useful.

She pointed to another line. "8:27. Officer accessed security control panel."

Marcus nodded. "I saw him open the panel near the security desk."

"Could you see what controls he used?"

"No."

"Could you tell whether he disabled anything?"

"No."
