"Those are separate matters."
Legal counsel spoke next. "They may not remain separate if the investigation expands."
Maya looked at Whitaker. "You paused the investigation yesterday for administrative reasons. You connected that pause to my assignment before I left your office."
Whitaker kept his voice measured. "I told you that institutional relationships matter."
"And this meeting is meant to show me how much they matter."
The security director shifted in his chair. "No one here is threatening you, Judge Williams."
"Then no one should have difficulty being specific."
Silence followed.
Maya opened her folder and placed the technical report on the table. "The current evidence shows an unjustified delay in verification, a baton used to enforce confinement, a report that does not match an independent witness, and a manual override of the recording system during the detention. Those facts are already under review."
Legal counsel folded his hands. "They are allegations under review."
"The override is not an allegation."
"The intent behind it is."
"I agree. That is why the investigation should continue."
The court administrator leaned forward. "You are currently serving on a special assignment that depends on cooperation between several departments. If this becomes an external institutional inquiry, the working environment changes."
"Because people may be asked what they did."
"Because trust matters."
Maya looked at him. "Trust does not mean immunity from questions."
"No one said it did."
"Then stop using trust as an argument against review."
Whitaker intervened. "Maya, this is becoming unnecessarily adversarial."
"It became adversarial when my assignment was placed on the agenda after I refused a quiet disposition."
Whitaker's expression hardened. "You have a promising career ahead of you."
Maya did not respond.
He continued, "You are thirty-nine years old. You are already carrying responsibilities that judges with more years on the bench have spent entire careers trying to earn. Special assignments like this matter. They affect future appointments, committee roles, administrative leadership, professional credibility."
Maya looked around the table. "So now we are speaking plainly."
Legal counsel shook his head. "No one is saying your career is in danger."
"Then my career should not be part of this conversation."
The room went quiet again.
The security director cleared his throat. "Judge Williams, nobody disputes that Officer Reed made mistakes."
"That is no longer the whole issue."
"We don't know that yet."
"We know the recording system was manually overridden."
"Yes."
"We know his report says I tried to push past him."
"Yes."
"We have an independent witness who saw no resistance."
"Yes."
"We know he had my name and did not verify it before detaining me."
The security director looked down.
Maya continued. "We also know the investigation was paused after those facts became harder to contain."
