When she stepped onto the street, a bus hissed to a halt across the intersection. Its passengers pressed toward the windows. Halverson pointed toward the front of the car and ordered her to put her hands on the hood. Nia moved slowly, describing her movements in an even voice. She was not performing innocence. She was making a record in the only way available to her.

“I'm walking toward the hood as instructed. My hands are open. I have no weapon. I am not attempting to leave.”

“Stop narrating,” he snapped. “Nobody asked for your opinion.”

He took hold of her wrist and forced her forward. A jolt ran through her right shoulder, sharp enough to make her catch her breath. She heard the click of a phone camera nearby and saw an older man in a work shirt lower his window. Halverson moved his body between her and the patrol car, raising his voice to announce that she was resisting.

“I'm not resisting,” Nia repeated. “You're hurting my shoulder.”

“Then stop making me do it.”

He searched her with unnecessarily rough movements while another cruiser arrived and stopped behind the first. Its driver, a younger officer with close-cropped hair, got out but did not intervene. Nia could not read his nameplate from where her face was turned toward the pavement. She saw only his boots near the rear bumper and heard him ask Halverson whether he needed assistance. Halverson answered that he had everything under control, then reached briefly away from her body.

The little bag appeared a moment later.

She knew precisely where his hand had been, and the certainty of what she had seen gave her a dreadful kind of clarity. This was no misunderstanding about lights or identification. It was a performance designed to conclude with an arrest, with the apparent discovery of contraband providing the ending the officer had planned. Nia addressed the second officer, asking him to identify himself and summon a supervisor. He looked at Halverson before looking at her.

“Sir,” she said to him, “you are witnessing an unlawful search and the introduction of evidence that was not on my person. Please preserve your body-camera recording.”

The younger officer said nothing. Halverson stepped in front of him with the plastic bag raised and announced that Judge Whitaker would be going downtown. She asked again for a supervisor. He answered by pulling handcuffs from his belt and wrenching her hands behind her back. The cuffs pressed tightly against the small watch her father had once worn through twenty-seven years of early bus routes.
