Brenda suddenly turned toward her car. The deputy, who had been standing between the vehicles and the porch, instructed her to remain where she was. She stopped, looking from one uniform to the other, and demanded an attorney. Morrison told her that she could have one and that nobody was asking her to waive that right.

Detective Sarah Collins arrived a few minutes later in an unmarked vehicle. She had spent six months following complaints connected to Senior Care Solutions, including troubling financial records from two former clients. Her investigation had not yet established that any death was criminal, and she had been frustrated by incomplete files and a lack of direct testimony from a surviving victim. The call from Morrison had changed the immediate priorities of her day.

Collins introduced herself to Evelyn with a quiet confidence that did not feel like another attempt to take control. She said the medical team needed to bring her to the hospital and that she could give a detailed statement after she had been examined. Evelyn wanted to protest that she had already told the story three times. Then she saw the concern on the paramedic's face and realized she had spent too many months placing her health last.

"I will talk to you afterward," she said. "But please don't let the papers disappear."

"They won't," Collins replied. "We'll record what we have, obtain what we need through the proper process, and keep you informed. You have already done something very important by coming forward."

Brenda was taken into custody that evening on allegations supported by the initial evidence, including assault and unlawful restraint, while the financial and medical investigations continued. She protested that she had only tried to help a difficult client and demanded that officers call the agency. Morrison did not argue with her in the driveway. He read the applicable warnings, ensured her rights were respected, and directed the deputy to document the arrest without spectacle.

Neighbors had gathered behind fences and at the edges of their lawns. Martha stood on her porch with a hand over her mouth, watching the woman she had once praised for being attentive escorted toward a patrol car. She looked across the yard at Evelyn and saw the bruises visible beneath her sleeves. For a moment she could not reconcile the woman in the chair with the cheerful neighbor who used to bring her jars of homemade tomato sauce.

Evelyn did not feel triumphant when Brenda was led away. She felt tired, uncertain, and painfully aware that the house still contained all the rooms where terrible things had happened. She had expected courage to bring immediate relief, but the relief came tangled with exhaustion. Bear stayed beside her while the paramedics prepared to leave, and Wrench promised that the riders would help secure the house under the sheriff's direction once the investigators were finished.
