Ryan recovered instantly. He was good. He threw again a combination this time, jab and cross, then a clinch attempt, and Ethan read all three before they arrived and moved through them like they were happening in slow motion. The crowd was absolutely silent. Ryan tried a takedown, dropped his level, drove forward, arms wrapping for the legs. Ethan sprawled back, denied it, used Ryan’s momentum to guide him sideways, and Ryan went to one knee on the pavement.

He came back up immediately, breathing harder, eyes different now. The performance was gone. The showmanship was gone. What was in his eyes now was actual real unfiltered alarm. Because he was good, he was genuinely good. And the man in front of him was doing to him what he had never had done to him, which was nothing. Ethan wasn’t attacking. He wasn’t countering. He was simply making Ryan miss over and over with a precision and an ease that had only one explanation. And Ryan’s brain was starting to arrive at that explanation and not like what it found.

Ryan came again harder, faster, desperation beginning to sharpen his technique even as it undermined his composure. Ethan let him close the distance. Let him get an arm around his neck. A rear clinch attempt, strong with real leverage. Then Ethan did something. It was fast and it was controlled and it was over in approximately two seconds. And when it was finished, Ryan was on the ground on his back and Ethan was standing upright above him and Ryan was looking up at the sky and breathing hard and not immediately moving.

Victor took a step forward from the curb. “Don’t,” Linda said clearly to Victor. Victor stopped. Ryan sat up slowly. He put one hand on the ground. He sat there in the middle of the street in front of everyone and he looked up at Ethan. And the expression on his face had changed completely. It wasn’t anger anymore. It wasn’t arrogance. It wasn’t the performance. It was something much younger and much more raw. It was shock.

Ethan crouched down to his level. He spoke quietly enough that the words were only for Ryan. “I served fifteen years,” he said. “I’ve been in places that would end you in thirty seconds. I have never once wanted to hurt you. I’m not going to hurt you now.” He paused. “Get up. Go home. Think about what you actually want your life to be.” Ryan stared at him. Ethan stood up. He turned and walked back to where Lily was standing.
