Victor was quiet for a moment. “He said—the investigator—he said he’d been doing this work for twenty years and he’d never pulled a file that looked like yours.” A pause. “He said some of it was classified to a level he couldn’t access.” “Yes,” Ethan said. “He said the parts he could access—” Victor stopped. He pressed his mouth together for a moment and Ethan watched him work through something. Some combination of embarrassment and something that might have been genuine if belated respect. “He said the word extraordinary three times in a five-minute call. And this man doesn’t compliment people.”

Ethan said nothing. “I owe you an apology,” Victor said. “You owe my daughter an apology,” Ethan said. “I can handle myself. She’s fifteen. She went to school and heard rumors that her father was dangerous and unstable. She had her friends asking if she needed help. That’s what your son did, and you let it happen.”

Victor took that. He didn’t deflect it, which surprised Ethan slightly. He took it the way a man who understood he deserved it takes a hard thing without flinching away, but without pretending it didn’t hurt either. “You’re right,” Victor said. “I knew what Ryan was doing. I thought he was just—” a short uncomfortable sound. “I thought he was establishing himself, making his mark. I thought that’s what young men did, and you just let them do it, and eventually they settle down.” “Not all young men,” Ethan said. “And not all situations.” “No,” Victor said. “Not all situations.”

He turned and looked at Ethan directly for the first time. “What I did coming over here that first time trying to smooth it over, I was protecting him. I was already building the legal defense in my head before anything had even happened. That’s what I do. That’s what I’ve always done for him.” He paused. “I think that might be the problem.” It was the most honest thing Ethan had ever heard from him. “Yes,” Ethan said. “It might be.”

Victor nodded slowly. He looked back at the street. “Ryan hasn’t left his house since Saturday,” he said. “He’s not returning calls from his gym. He won’t talk to me. Not really. I get one-word answers.” He paused. “I think he’s—I don’t know what he is. Embarrassed isn’t the right word. It’s more than that.” “Shaken,” Ethan said. Victor looked at him. “Yes, that’s the word.” “Good,” Ethan said. Victor blinked. He’d clearly expected something softer. “I mean that in the best possible way,” Ethan said. “Shaken is the beginning of recalibration. It means something real got through. Whether he does something useful with it is up to him.”
