The cabin had become intensely uncomfortable. Passengers who had expected an uneventful flight were watching a senior attendant argue about whether an injured child should receive water. Some were openly furious. Others looked ashamed that they had done nothing during the first confrontation. Caleb was aware of their attention in a way that made his stomach tighten. He hated the fact that the whole cabin seemed to be looking at his face.

"It's okay," he whispered, addressing no one in particular. "I'm okay." But his eyes were filling again, and Graham knew the reassurance was meant for the adults. Children often did that when they sensed a situation was becoming too frightening for the grown-ups. They tried to make themselves smaller so the trouble would end. Graham felt an ache of guilt for not intervening sooner.

Jaime returned with a paper cup, a bottle of cool water, and a soft cloth. She gave Caleb the cup with both hands so he could steady it. He thanked her automatically, even though he was struggling not to cry. Evelyn leaned into the aisle and told him he was being very brave. Caleb looked at her and asked a question that made her smile fade: "Would you have helped if I wasn't in first class?"

Evelyn considered the question seriously. "I hope so," she answered. "But I wish I had helped sooner right here." Caleb nodded as though the answer made sense. He had already learned that grown-ups were not always able to do what they believed they would do. Sometimes their goodness arrived late, and sometimes it had to be encouraged into the open.

Karen returned before Caleb had finished the water. She was now visibly alarmed by the captain's decision to halt departure, and that alarm had become a fresh source of hostility. She accused Graham of using his influence to interfere with the operation and accused Caleb of pretending to be helpless. "You see what you've done?" she asked the boy. "You've delayed an entire aircraft because you couldn't follow a simple instruction."

Caleb set the cup on his armrest. He looked at Karen with a seriousness that did not belong on a ten-year-old's face. "I didn't ask for the plane to stop," he said. "I asked you to check my seat." Karen told him he was not in a position to correct her. Caleb swallowed, then added, "And I asked you not to tear my mom's letter."

Graham stepped forward. He told Karen that the conversation was over and that she needed to wait for her supervisor. But Karen continued talking past him, directing her anger toward the boy as though he were the source of everything that had gone wrong. Caleb looked up and said the quiet words that would later appear in hundreds of headlines: "My mom would be disappointed to hear how you treated me." He was speaking about a mother, not a billionaire, and he sounded genuinely sad.
