"I followed procedure," Karen insisted. Daniels looked at the documents in Karen's hand. "Then we will make sure the procedure is identified and reviewed," she replied, without raising her voice. She asked Karen not to speak to Caleb or any potential witness until their preliminary interviews were complete. Karen seemed ready to protest, but Captain Torres told her to return to the galley. For the first time that morning, she obeyed without argument.

Ramirez stopped beside seat 2A and crouched so Caleb would not have to tilt his head to look at him. He introduced himself, explained that he was there to make sure Caleb was safe, and asked whether a trusted adult could stay beside him. Caleb nodded toward Graham. Ramirez asked his name and relationship to the boy, then verified the arrangement with the child rather than accepting a stranger's title at face value. Graham produced identification and the airline's authorized-contact details.

"My name is Caleb Wittmann," the boy said when Ramirez asked. He pointed to his red backpack, the torn letter, and the boarding pass laid carefully across his lap. His explanation came in an orderly sequence because that was how his mind handled things when he was frightened. He had boarded with Marisol, sat where the ticket told him to sit, and answered questions about his mother. He had tried to retrieve his letter and backpack. Then the woman hit him.

"Did she hit you once or more than once?" Daniels asked gently. Caleb looked down at his hands. "Twice," he said.

"After the first time, I pressed my watch because Mom told me to use it if something bad happened. She came back later and did it again." He did not cry while saying it, though his words became slower near the end. He asked if he had gotten Graham into trouble by using the watch.

"No," Graham answered before he could stop himself. Ramirez glanced at him, and Graham apologized for interrupting. The officer told Caleb that asking for help was the right decision and that adults were responsible for what adults did. He asked permission for the airport medical team to examine Caleb's face. Caleb agreed after Daniels explained that the examination would be brief and that he could ask questions at any point.

Evelyn Price raised her hand from the next row. She offered to provide her video, noting that she had started recording immediately after the first slap and had captured the second. Daniel Brooks said he had seen both incidents, though his own recording began only after the first. Several other passengers offered shorter clips or photographs of the torn letter. Daniels collected contact information without asking anyone to hand over the only copy of their files, explaining that investigators would arrange secure transfers and document the original recordings.
