Caleb shook his head. He could feel his face growing hot, and his voice emerged thinner than he intended. "I'm not trying to be rude. I just want my bag and my seat."

Karen raised her hand and struck him. The movement was sudden, uncontrolled, and unmistakable. Caleb's head turned with the impact, and the torn letter slipped from his fingers. Somewhere behind him a seat belt clicked open, while Evelyn made a sound of disbelief. The cabin seemed to suspend itself around the space where he stood.

For Caleb, the first sensation was heat. The second was confusion, made worse by the realization that he had done everything his mother told him to do. He had spoken politely, kept his hands to himself, and offered proof that he was supposed to be there. Nothing had protected him. He pressed one palm to his cheek and tried to swallow the tightness rising in his throat.

"Did you just hit him?" Daniel demanded. He was standing before he realized he had moved, his tablet abandoned on the seat. Karen told him to sit down immediately and accused Caleb of creating a disturbance.

Daniel refused to pretend that a child had caused the adult's violence. "I watched the whole thing," he said. "He was asking for his belongings. That's all."

Evelyn had already raised her phone. She started recording, announcing the time softly so the video would preserve context. A woman two rows ahead turned and asked if the boy was hurt. Other passengers began reaching for their phones, but not everyone reacted. One man turned toward the window, visibly uncomfortable with being pulled into a public conflict, and another murmured that nobody knew what had happened before boarding.

Graham was out of his seat now. His first concern was Caleb, not the documentation he had been trained to collect. "Caleb," he said, moving into the aisle, "I'm right here." The boy looked at him, and for an instant relief crossed his face. Then Caleb glanced toward Karen and appeared to remember that he was supposed to be managing the flight without being fussed over.

"Did I do something bad?" he asked. Graham felt an anger so sharp he had to choose his next words carefully. "No," he told him.

"You didn't do anything wrong. What happened was not acceptable." He asked Caleb whether he could see clearly and whether his cheek hurt. Caleb nodded, but when Graham offered to help him sit down, he whispered that he wanted to call his mother first.

The watch was still on his left wrist. Caleb held the face with two fingers, followed by the short and long pattern he had practiced at breakfast. A tiny light pulsed green against the dark band. The device transmitted his approximate location and an emergency request to the foundation's monitoring team. The vibration that followed was small enough that only he could feel it.
