"I'm at the gate. They won't let me in."

Two seconds of silence passed. "What do you mean they won't let you in?"

"New security. They say they don't recognize me. They rejected my license, refused to look at the deed, and told me to come back Monday."

"I'm coming down there right now."

The line went dead.

Fletcher placed the phone in his lap and waited. Craig stood several feet away watching him. Dennis remained behind the vehicle, the golf cart blocking the lane.

Then a white Mercedes-Benz S-Class approached from outside the community. Victoria Ashford sat behind the wheel, sixty years old, silver hair pinned in a French twist, pearl earrings, cream blazer, and silk blouse. She was returning from her regular Saturday garden-club brunch at the country club.

Victoria slowed behind Fletcher's Range Rover and lowered her window. Craig hurried toward her immediately, his posture deferential.

"Morning, Mrs. Ashford. Sorry about the delay. This gentleman claims he's a resident and says he lives at 1 Greystone Lane, but I can't find him in the system and he can't provide proper verification."

Victoria looked directly at Fletcher.

She knew exactly who he was.

Eighteen months earlier, she had personally signed his HOA welcome letter. She had approved his quarterly dues. Three weeks earlier, she had approved the master resident list sent to Sentinel Shield. Fletcher's photograph was on page two, beside a description of the same matte black Range Rover now sitting in front of her.

Victoria knew.

She turned back to Craig. "Well, if he's not in the system, you're doing the right thing, Craig. That's what we pay you for."

Then she looked at Fletcher and smiled politely. "Sweetie, if there's been some kind of mix-up, maybe a delivery or service call, I can point you to the service entrance around back. It's just past the south wall."

Fletcher studied her face. "Mrs. Ashford, you know exactly who I am."

For a fraction of a second, her smile faltered. Then it returned.

"I'm sorry. I don't believe we've met."

She rolled up her window, and Craig opened the side lane for her. Victoria drove through without another glance.

Three minutes later, Brenda appeared on foot from inside the estate. She walked quickly down the tree-lined road, jaw set and eyes fixed on the gate. She did not stop until she was directly in front of Craig.

"My name is Brenda Owens. I live at 1 Greystone Lane. That man in the car is my husband. Open this gate now."

Craig looked from Brenda to Fletcher and back again. He did not move toward the controls.

Victoria had parked just inside the gate. Now she stepped onto the sidewalk. "Ma'am, let's all calm down. We have protocols here. We can't open the gate because someone walks up and says they live here."
