"Fine," he said. "Let's clear the air."

Danielle looked toward the open stretch of concrete where the confrontation had begun. It was still marked by a faint scuff from Voss's shoe and a small streak of dust where the broken credential had fallen. She had not chosen the setting for theatrics. It was the best place to put the participants in view of multiple cameras and to keep Leah away from an escalating argument indoors.

"Then let's begin with the first thing your officer told me," she said.

Danielle did not set the laptop on a pedestal or arrange a circle of spectators. She placed it on the tailgate of the command support vehicle, where the screen could be seen without requiring anyone to stand near the open pump cabinet. Torres positioned another agent beside the equipment, and Keene stood a short distance away with her own notebook. Leah remained by the store entrance. She had asked to observe, but Danielle made it clear that she could step inside whenever she wished.

There was a tension in the air that no amount of procedural order could hide. Voss was still wearing the uniform that had allowed him to stop Danielle before she reached the cabinet. Shaw stood next to him, the district captain who had spent hours claiming to control the scene. Across from them were the people whose evidence had been dismissed as a misunderstanding: an investigator with bruised wrists, a store manager holding a worn notebook, and a logistics sergeant whose vehicle records had exposed the false purchases.

"We are reviewing an original recording of the encounter at 8:10 this morning," Danielle said. "It was stored independently of the station systems. The files and their verification logs have been preserved through the federal evidence archive. There will be no private editing or selective alteration of the originals."

Shaw folded his arms. "I assume we can obtain copies through counsel."

"Yes. Evidence disclosure will follow the applicable procedures. Right now I'm asking you to listen to statements you have already made. You are not required to answer my questions, and I won't draw an inference here from your silence."

Voss gave a short laugh. "If you've got some dramatic video of an arrest, go ahead. We all know what happened."

Danielle pressed play.

Her own voice came first, calm and plainly audible: she identified herself as Special Agent Danielle Cross with Army CID, offered verification through the issuing agency, and explained that she was conducting official business. Voss's voice followed, mocking her clothes and the vehicle. The video showed him seizing the credential wallet after Danielle offered to display it. It showed her hands open and clearly visible. It showed the badge buckle under his thumb and break.

The small snap carried over the speaker.

Keene looked at the ground. She had witnessed the aftermath, but seeing the action in sequence was different. Voss stared at the image of his own hand. For the first time since the morning, his mouth remained closed.
