Her name was Sofia Park. She was twenty-nine, worked as an operations coordinator for Ryan's consulting firm, and had recently discovered that the company she thought she was helping build was carrying two sets of explanations for the same project. The internal team was told Silverbank provided market analysis. A prospective developer was told Silverbank had secured proprietary venue access and was ready to deliver client approvals. The invoices described services Sofia couldn't find evidence anyone had performed.

She raised the discrepancy with Ryan during an ordinary Monday meeting. He told her not to confuse administrative work with strategy, then instructed her to move certain documents into a folder marked confidential. Sofia refused to approve invoices she couldn't verify. Two days later her access to several projects was reduced, and the next week she was told her position might no longer be necessary.

Sofia didn't know me. She had seen my name on email chains and my signature on a limited consulting authorization, but she had never had a conversation with me. She did, however, know exactly who owned Alder Street Sound. Its contact information was on the agreements she had been asked to process, and after speaking with her own attorney she contacted Elise Warren to report possible discrepancies, providing copies of messages and records sent to or accessible by her in the normal course of her job.

Some of the messages concerned business. Others concerned the rooftop. They had been posted in a group thread that Sofia was included in because Ryan had told her she would coordinate a meeting between his clients and representatives of Westbridge's local acquisition team. The thread was called Friday Transition, and Ryan had given it that name before I even knew that a Friday gathering was part of his plan.

One message read: Keep the upstairs table until ten. We need him to arrive while they're together. Another, from a consultant named Oliver Madsen, asked whether recording was arranged. Ryan replied: Not a problem. She wants him to see it. He'll come angry, and the scene will make everyone understand why he can't manage this project.

The developer's official leadership had not authorized this scheme; Oliver and Ryan were discussing what they hoped to use as leverage in a private transaction. That distinction would become important later.

Sofia had been ordered to book a private hospitality suite at the Aster House Hotel, whose rooftop bar overlooked the brightest stretch of Broadway. The suite was for the prospective buyers and a hired media consultant who was supposed to document what Ryan called an unscheduled confrontation. Sofia asked whether the people being filmed would consent. Ryan told her she was being difficult and that a public bar was public, as though that settled everything about his intent.

Then she saw the message that finally moved her from suspicion to certainty. Ryan wrote: After he loses it, she'll have no marriage to go back to. Get the proposal in front of her before she has time to talk to a lawyer. She believes she's choosing me. Don't correct that.
