Sofia stared at the sentence in the empty office for a long time, knowing she was looking at something crueler than a questionable business tactic. She forwarded the relevant messages to her attorney and asked whether she could warn the people whose lives were being used as leverage.

Elise arranged a meeting with Ethan in a private conference room at the Aster House on the morning of the rooftop event. Sofia brought what she was legally able to share: the project communications, a booking confirmation for the private suite, and a record of the consulting documents Ryan had asked her to prepare. She did not have a secret recording of the couple's conversations, and she did not claim to know whether I had genuinely fallen for him. She had the written evidence of what Ryan had told his business associates about me.

Ethan listened while she explained the plan. He asked questions about the invoices, the investor meeting, and the authorization I had signed. When Sofia showed him the sentence about my believing I was choosing Ryan, he went quiet for so long that she asked whether he needed a break. He shook his head and told her to continue. He was trying, she later said, not to let humiliation make him careless.

At the end of the meeting, Sofia handed Elise a small envelope. Inside were copies of the hotel booking documents, a spare black keycard that the hotel had issued for the project meeting room, and a valet ticket from an earlier visit that helped establish who had attended. The items were not a magic solution and did not prove the whole scheme by themselves. Together with the messages, they showed why that particular hotel mattered and why Ryan had been so insistent about the location and timing.

Ethan left with copies of the documents his attorney believed he could lawfully retain. He didn't call me immediately. He sat in his truck in the parking garage and thought about nine years, about his father's warehouse, and about the woman who had just told him that his wife's supposedly romantic rebellion was also a calculated part of somebody else's business strategy. Then he drove home and did the thing that had made his words at the rooftop so bewildering to me.

He packed a suitcase. He moved his personal documents and the box of tapes his father had left him into the truck. He left my belongings untouched and placed a note on the kitchen counter explaining that he would be staying elsewhere while we arranged a legal separation. He wrote that the company was undergoing an independent financial review and that business decisions would be handled through counsel until the ownership questions were resolved.
