James looked at her for a long moment. "You heard yourself say that, right?" He had spent years avoiding arguments with his mother, but the evening had made the customary silence feel impossible. Victoria glared at him, wounded by the challenge from her own son. Richard stepped between them, not because he wanted to defend her, but because he was frightened by the urgency of what might happen next.

"We need to speak to Maya," Richard said. "Both of us." Victoria reached automatically for the smooth professional smile she had used to welcome donors for decades. It no longer fitted her face.

"I'll explain that this has been taken out of context," she replied. Richard looked at her in disbelief. "There is no context in which striking a guest was the right thing to do."

At that moment, Tessa Bell arrived with Anika Lewis and a security supervisor. They spoke quietly to Richard, explaining that Maya had been checked in correctly and seated at the designated head table. The hotel's registration record had been available the entire time, and a member of staff could have verified her identity in seconds. Victoria listened with the rigid posture of someone enduring an insult. Every detail removed another excuse she had prepared to offer.

"I personally checked her in," Tessa said. Her voice shook, but she did not look away. "She was invited. Her place card was printed, and I offered to escort her to the table." Richard asked why nobody had corrected the misunderstanding sooner.

Tessa hesitated, and then decided not to soften the answer. "Because she was already being accused by someone everyone in this hotel knows, sir. We were afraid of making things worse."

Anika added that the incident had been documented and that Maya had requested preservation of the footage. She offered to place the family in a private room if they wanted to address the matter through hotel management. Richard thanked her and said he would approach Maya directly, then contact her lawyers if necessary. Anika did not promise that such an approach would be welcomed. A business conversation was not a substitute for consent from the person who had been struck.

Richard crossed the ballroom in what felt like the longest thirty seconds of his professional life. He rehearsed phrases about regret and misunderstanding, trying to construct an apology that would leave enough space for a deal to be rescued. He was still calculating the words when he arrived beside Maya's table. For a brief moment he thought he might be able to speak to her as two executives who had encountered an unfortunate social complication. Then she looked up, and he realized that she had heard everything his family had done.

"Ms. Brooks," he began. "I'm Richard Whitmore. I need to apologize for what happened this evening." Maya placed her menu on the table and looked directly at him.

She did not offer her hand or invite him to sit. "I'm listening, Mr. Whitmore." Her voice was neither hostile nor welcoming.
