Maya paused near the ballroom entrance as the music rose. She saw clusters of people positioned by influence, younger associates orbiting older executives, and servers moving through the gaps that wealth seemed to create around itself. She saw a charity banner promising opportunity to children who had been denied it and, beneath it, a donor asking a waiter to retrieve a particular brand of sparkling water from another floor. She recognized the contradiction without taking pleasure in it. She was there to support the cause and evaluate a partnership, not to administer a moral examination to every stranger she encountered.

A young server nearly lost his balance when a guest stepped backward without looking. Maya steadied the edge of his tray before the glasses could slide and murmured, "You've got it." The server whispered thanks and continued. A woman standing beside the champagne station saw the interaction, then lost interest when Maya moved on. To most of the room, the woman in the navy gown remained a guest who did not announce herself and therefore did not seem especially important.

Maya accepted a glass of champagne she did not plan to drink. She listened to a conversation about the value of family names and another about the difficulty of recruiting employees who would stay in manufacturing jobs. An executive who had never visited one of Whitmore's plants described workers as interchangeable without noticing a hotel employee standing close enough to hear. Maya filed the comment away because it echoed concerns her diligence team had raised about management culture. None of it had yet changed her decision, but she was still listening.

At 7:57, Victoria Whitmore noticed the unfamiliar woman approaching the restricted seating area. Her eyes moved over the navy gown, the simple jewelry, the absence of a visible escort, and the fact that nobody around her appeared to be announcing her arrival. Victoria was certain she knew everyone who belonged at the head tables, and certainty made verification feel unnecessary. She excused herself from two friends, placed her glass on a passing tray, and stepped into Maya's path.

The evening had not yet reached the first course.

"May I see your invitation?" Victoria asked. Her words had the construction of politeness, but her tone suggested that the answer would only confirm a conclusion already reached.

Maya stopped an arm's length from her and opened her clutch. She produced a cream-colored card bearing the event's embossed emblem and her full name, then waited while Victoria examined it. The older woman's gaze flickered over the card and returned to Maya's face without softening.

"The invitation isn't the issue," Victoria said, handing it back. "Those tables are reserved, and we have a separate list for people who are expected there." Maya glanced toward the nearest seating chart.

"I understand. My name is on the primary list, and I checked in downstairs." Victoria responded with a thin smile. "Everyone says their name is on a list when they want something they're not entitled to."
