I paid the bill because that was what I was used to doing, and because I wanted the evening to end without another negotiation. Outside, the night air was cool, and people moved along the sidewalk in couples and groups, laughing as they passed. Kate touched my arm near the parking lot and told me she was glad we'd talked. I said I'd think about what she'd said. She looked relieved, apparently hearing the answer as a small promise that the dinner had worked.

What I thought about afterward was how little of the conversation had concerned her actions. It had been mostly about the way I should respond to them. That was not a basis for rebuilding trust, even if I had wanted to rebuild it. I sat in my car for a few minutes before driving home and wrote one sentence in the notes app on my phone: I asked for facts, and she answered with instructions about my feelings. It was the clearest summary of the evening I could make.

The following Monday, Sandra called with news about the response filed by Kate's attorney. The lawyer's letter was formal and carefully worded, claiming that the forty-three-thousand-dollar down payment should be treated as a contribution or gift to the marital partnership rather than money to which I retained a separate claim. The position wasn't absurd; Sandra explained that a transfer between people buying a home together could be characterized in different ways depending on documentation and the applicable law. But it was more aggressive than the informal conversations Kate and I had ever had about the purchase.

Sandra asked me again for the original bank transfer confirmation, including the memo field, and the purchase agreement. I emailed the files from the folder while she was still on the phone. She confirmed receipt and said we'd review the wider financial history at our next meeting. I could hear papers moving on her desk as she spoke, and I found the sound unexpectedly reassuring. Facts were not always simple, but there were at least ways to examine them.

After the call I sat in my car, looking at the email I'd sent. It was strange to think that six years before, when I'd typed "down payment contribution" into a banking form, I'd simply been trying to make our financial records clear. Now those words were part of an argument about whether the savings I'd accumulated before we were married had been freely surrendered. I could not prove my intentions by telling Sandra how happy I had been when the house purchase closed. Fortunately, I didn't have to rely only on the memory of that happiness.

Kate's attorney also presented a story about the breakdown of our marriage that made me sound emotionally volatile. According to the written position, I had reacted disproportionately to an isolated marital mistake and was using the divorce process to punish Kate financially. The phrase "disproportionate response" appeared more than once. I read it three times because it felt so different from the actual person who'd spent evenings quietly organizing documents while his wife watched television in the next room.
