maintenance contracts came through my account. Kate handled expenses she could see on her phone and talk about in passing, including her car insurance, subscriptions, travel bookings, and memberships. We never made a formal agreement that the arrangement had to stay that way. We simply repeated it until it felt like the natural order of our marriage.

I didn't keep a running grievance tally. I kept an expense log, which is different, at least when you start one. It was a spreadsheet for budgeting and planning, not a scorecard, and Kate used to tease me about it when she saw it open on Sunday nights. "You're treating our house like a warehouse," she'd say, smiling. I'd smile back and tell her that warehouses didn't generally surprise you with six-thousand-dollar plumbing bills, which was exactly why I planned for our house as carefully as I did.

For a long time, the small imbalances seemed reasonable because I believed we were both sacrificing for a shared future. I turned down a job opportunity in another city when Kate earned a promotion she'd been pursuing for months. I helped her pay off a credit card balance that had accumulated during a difficult period at work. When she asked me to skip a family weekend because she needed me at a networking event, I went with her and did my best to be supportive. None of those decisions felt like something I would someday need to recover in a legal settlement.

The Tuesday I found out began with a revised delivery schedule and a cancellation. A client site visit that normally kept me working until after seven was postponed because an inspection team hadn't finished its review. I wrapped up my desk work, told Graham, my manager, I'd be heading home early, and left before the traffic grew heavy. It was about forty minutes earlier than my usual Tuesday arrival. On the drive, I considered stopping for groceries because I'd promised to cook dinner, but there were still enough ingredients in the refrigerator to make pasta.

Kate's car was in the driveway when I turned onto our street. I remember noticing that because Tuesdays were the one night she nearly always stayed late. Her team had a recurring meeting, and afterward she usually went over presentation revisions with her coworkers. I thought her plans had changed, just as mine had. At most, I wondered whether she'd be pleased that we could have an ordinary evening together rather than eating separately at nine.

When I stepped inside, the house was quiet. Her shoes were beside the bench in the hallway, and her bag was on the chair near the kitchen, a place I'd asked her not to leave it because the strap caught on the table leg. She sat at the kitchen table, looking at her phone with her laptop open beside her. There was a cup of coffee in front of her, already cold. I said hello and asked what she wanted for dinner.
