We also discussed the household cost records. Kate had paid for significant expenses over the years, and Sandra didn't want the spreadsheet presented as if she had contributed nothing. We went through the categories carefully to avoid double-counting transfers and to distinguish shared necessities from purchases that benefited only one of us. I discovered two items I'd classified incorrectly, corrected them, and sent a revised version that evening. The overall pattern didn't change, but I felt better knowing the record was as accurate as I could make it.

Diane agreed to provide a statement about the vehicle she'd observed. I asked her on a Wednesday afternoon, standing by the same garden where she'd first mentioned the car. I told her a lawyer had suggested it might be useful to have a written account of what she'd personally seen, and that she was under no obligation to become involved. She frowned with concern and asked whether there had been a crime. I said no, it concerned a private civil matter, and I didn't want to discuss anyone else's personal details.

She considered that, then nodded. "I'll write down what I remember," she said. "But I don't want anybody assuming I know why that car was there. I only know what I saw." I told her that was exactly right. Two days later she gave me two paragraphs written in neat, teacherly handwriting, describing a dark sedan, several evenings when it had parked along our street, and the license number she'd noted while checking whether it was near the hydrant.

The tone of her statement mattered to me. There was no accusation in it and nothing about betrayal. She didn't claim to have watched anyone enter our house or to know who was driving. She described the kind of mundane observation a careful neighbor might remember. Sandra thanked her through me and preserved a copy, cautioning that how the statement could be used would depend on what issues the mediation actually reached.

The more delicate item came through Priya. She had a friend named Natalie who knew people in Kate's circle, though I had never paid much attention to that overlap. Natalie had mentioned to Priya that Kate's closest friend, Lena, had privately expressed guilt about knowing of the relationship with the coworker for months before I discovered it. Priya didn't bring the information to me immediately because she wasn't sure I needed another secondhand story. She waited until the divorce discussion turned heavily on the claim of one isolated incident and then asked whether I wanted Sandra to know.

I did, but I was careful about what I asked. I didn't want Priya pressuring Natalie or Natalie pressuring Lena to say something more convenient than the truth. Sandra contacted Natalie directly after I supplied her details and explained what kind of statement might be useful. Natalie was willing to document what Lena had said, when she'd said it, and the context of their conversation. Sandra warned that the account was indirect and could face hearsay objections, especially if we tried to use it to prove the underlying affair itself.
