She knew my answer would matter, so she found a way to proceed without asking.

I sat back down.

Vanessa covered her mouth with one hand.

“I didn’t mean it like that.”

“Yes, you did.”

“I meant you’re conservative with money.”

“I am careful with money we both own.”

“You never take risks.”

“I married you.”

She almost smiled despite herself, then the expression disappeared.

For a moment we were the couple we used to be, two people who could still find the joke in an argument. The flash hurt more than the anger.

“I wasn’t trying to steal the house,” she said quietly.

“I don’t think you were.”

She looked surprised.

“I think you wanted the investment badly enough to convince yourself consent was a technicality you could fix later.”

Her eyes lowered.

“That is not better.”

“I know.”

We sat without speaking.

Finally Vanessa asked, “What happens now?”

“I meet Rachel Monday.”

“And before then?”

“We don’t move money. We don’t destroy documents. We don’t bring other people here. We keep household bills normal.”

She swallowed.

“What about us?”

“I don’t know what legal separation looks like yet.”

“That’s not what I’m asking.”

I knew.

“Do you love me?” she asked.

The question was cruel in its timing, though I do not think she meant it cruelly.

“Yes.”

Her face broke.

“Then how can you just end it?”

“Love is not the same as permission.”

“Permission for what?”

“To keep doing this because I love you.”

She stared at me.

“I made mistakes.”

“You created a second version of our marriage for another man. You told your ex we were separated. You moved joint money without telling me. You used my information to explore borrowing against our house. Those are not one mistake.”

“I can fix the money.”

“This is not only about money.”

“I’ll end everything with Adrian.”

“He ended it last night.”

She looked down.

“I can stop talking to Daniel.”

“This is not about Daniel either.”

“Then tell me what you want.”

I thought about that.

“I want a marriage where I don’t need forensic accounting to know what my wife is doing.”

She closed her eyes.

“I want to ask a question without being told the question itself is abusive. I want ‘no’ to mean we stop and discuss something, not that you hide it until you can present it as inevitable. I want to believe home means the same thing to both of us.”

Her voice was barely audible.

“I can change.”

“Maybe.”
