That frustrated him.

It also protected the integrity of the investigation.

Tommy stopped surveillance once the divorce evidence was sufficient.

“You have what you need.”

“What about Grant?”

“Federal agents do not need a private investigator following their subject around because your marriage ended.”

Andrew nodded.

“You’re right.”

“I know.”

“You enjoy saying that.”

“Occupational hazard.”

Then the hospital suspended Wesley.

Lauren came home that evening at five thirty, nearly three hours earlier than normal.

Her face was white.

Andrew was reading in the living room.

“What happened?”

She looked at him.

For the first time in weeks, the performance was gone.

“Wesley’s been placed on administrative leave.”

Andrew said nothing.

Lauren dropped her purse.

“They’re investigating billing.”

“What kind of billing?”

“I don’t know.”

Her voice was too quick.

Andrew looked at her.

“Do you?”

She stared.

“What does that mean?”

“It means I’m asking.”

“Why are you acting like this?”

Andrew closed the book.

“Lauren.”

She froze.

“I filed for divorce.”

Silence.

Everything changed in her face.

Shock first.

Then disbelief.

Then fear.

“What?”

“You’ll be served through counsel.”

“Andrew.”

“I know about Wesley.”

Her mouth opened.

Nothing came.

“I know about the Marriott.”

“Andrew, listen.”

“I know you’ve been seeing him.”

She sat abruptly.

“How long?”

“Long enough.”

“Did you go through my phone?”

“No.”

“Then how?”

“It doesn’t matter.”

“It absolutely matters.”

“No.”

Andrew stood.

“What matters is that our marriage is over.”

Lauren stared at him.

“No.”

The word came out like an instinct.

“What do you mean, no?”

“You don’t get to just decide that.”

Andrew almost smiled.

“I’m fairly certain divorce can begin with one person deciding they no longer want to be married.”

“You’re angry.”

“Yes.”

“We can fix this.”

Andrew looked at her.

“Yesterday you were still sleeping with him.”

Lauren’s face crumpled slightly.

“It’s complicated.”

“No.”

Andrew shook his head.

“It was complicated before I knew.”

“Now it’s simple.”

“Andrew, please.”

“I’m not discussing the investigation. I’m not discussing Wesley. My attorney will handle the divorce.”

Her eyes widened.

“What investigation?”

Andrew immediately knew he had said too much.

Lauren stood.

“What investigation?”

“I know Wesley has problems at the hospital.”

“How?”

“I saw the billing review cover sheet you brought home.”

Her breathing changed.

“You reported me.”

“I reported confidential hospital documents being kept in this house.”

“Oh my God.”

“Lauren.”
