“You did this.”

“No.”

“You called them.”

“I told compliance what I observed.”

“You destroyed my career.”

Andrew’s voice remained low.

“If your career can be destroyed by someone accurately reporting what you did, then the report is not the problem.”

Lauren stared at him with a kind of hatred he had never seen before.

Then she grabbed her purse.

“Where are you going?”

“Away from you.”

She slammed the door.

Andrew stood in the living room.

His hands were shaking.

He sat.

For weeks he had imagined confrontation as something clean.

A moment of truth.

It was not.

It was ugly.

Sad.

Confusing.

He felt relieved and devastated at the same time.

The next day, his daughters came home.

Emily arrived first.

Twenty-three.

Recently hired at a financial-services firm.

She had Lauren’s auburn hair but Andrew’s habit of analyzing before speaking.

Chloe arrived from college an hour later.

Twenty.

Openly emotional in ways the rest of the family often was not.

Andrew made coffee.

Nobody drank it.

“Where’s Mom?” Chloe asked.

“Staying elsewhere.”

“Why?”

Andrew looked at both daughters.

There are conversations parents imagine having.

Graduation.

Marriage.

Illness.

Death.

Nobody imagines sitting two adult daughters down to explain that their mother has been having an affair and may also be entangled in a federal investigation.

Andrew spoke carefully.

“Your mother and I are divorcing.”

Emily stared.

Chloe immediately shook her head.

“No.”

Andrew continued.

“She has been involved with a doctor she works with.”

Chloe stood.

“No.”

“Chloe.”

“No, Dad.”

“I have evidence.”

“I don’t want evidence.”

Her voice cracked.

“That’s Mom.”

“I know.”

“Twenty years.”

“I know.”

“You guys don’t even fight.”

Andrew looked at her.

“That doesn’t mean nothing was wrong.”

Emily remained silent.

Too silent.

Andrew noticed.

“Emily?”

She looked at him.

“How long have you known?”

“A few weeks.”

“And you didn’t tell us.”

“I needed facts first.”

Emily nodded slowly.

Of course she understood that.

She was his daughter.

Chloe did not.

“So you were just pretending everything was normal?”

“I was protecting the investigation and protecting myself legally.”

“What investigation?”

There it was.

Andrew explained only what he could.

Wesley was being investigated over billing practices.

Lauren’s professional actions were under review.

No charges yet.

No conclusions.

Chloe started crying.

Emily covered her mouth.

“Is Mom going to prison?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did you turn her in?”

Chloe asked.

Andrew met her eyes.

“I reported confidential work documents that she brought home. The hospital and authorities are deciding what those documents mean.”
