The hydrangeas had grown back.

For a second, I remembered standing below while my wife threw my belongings toward me.

The memory no longer made me angry.

That surprised me.

It simply felt far away.

I closed the window.

Then I went downstairs.

The dining table remained in the same room.

I had considered selling it.

Eventually I kept it.

Furniture had not done anything wrong.

One Saturday my brother came over for dinner.

He sat in Brooke’s old seat without knowing it.

Halfway through the meal, he looked around the room.

“You okay here alone?”

I thought about the question.

“Yeah.”

“Really?”

“Really.”

He nodded.

Then he smiled.

“Still have separate bank accounts?”

I laughed.

“One of the advantages of being divorced is that all my accounts are separate.”

He raised his beer.

“To financial independence.”

I shook my head.

“To better judgment.”

That was closer.

Because in the end, the lesson was not that I had won.

Lauren lost a marriage too.

There was nothing victorious about six years ending through attorneys and cardboard boxes.

The lesson was that boundaries matter even inside love.

Maybe especially there.

You can share a house without surrendering ownership of yourself.

You can share money without turning one spouse into the other’s dependent.

You can accept advice from friends without giving them a vote in your marriage.

And when somebody tells you that your right to belong depends on your willingness to obey, you should pay very careful attention to what they have just told you.

Lauren thought throwing my clothes outside would force me to come back inside on her terms.

Instead, it made me stop long enough to ask whether I wanted to walk back in at all.

I didn’t.

And once I understood why, the rest was paperwork.
