He did not tell me Lauren was evil or that Chris had secretly been waiting to take my place. He asked whether I wanted to meet for breakfast and help making a plan for the lease. That was exactly the kind of friendship I needed. After we hung up, I looked at the hotel room, my small suitcase, and the receipts scattered across the desk. I had made a decision that could not be undone without a different kind of honesty from both of us, and for the first time I understood how much work still lay between leaving and actually being free.

On Friday, I went to work from the hotel as though it were an ordinary day. My team was reviewing a proposal to change the delivery schedule at a distribution center, and the numbers required my full attention. I was grateful for that. For ninety minutes, no one asked about wedding invitations or relationship statuses; they wanted to know whether a new route would reduce mileage enough to justify the extra labor. The problem had an answer, and finding it gave my mind somewhere stable to stand.

My coworker Priya noticed I was quieter than usual during our morning call. She asked afterward whether everything was all right. I told her I was handling a personal situation and might need to adjust a few appointments. She offered to cover a meeting if I needed time. I thanked her and accepted only the small part of the offer that would actually help, because I was beginning to learn that independence did not have to mean refusing every form of support.

At lunch, I called our property manager, a woman named Carmen who had handled our lease renewal the previous spring. I told her that Lauren and I were separating and asked whether there was a way to release me from the agreement. Carmen did not pretend the answer would be simple. Both names were on the lease, and the landlord could not erase one person's obligations just because the relationship had ended. She said there were options, but each required paperwork and, in some cases, Lauren's consent.

I appreciated the directness. Carmen explained that we could terminate the entire lease early, transfer it to Lauren alone if she qualified under the income requirements, or propose a replacement tenant for consideration. None of those choices could be imposed on Lauren by me. I asked for the options in writing and told Carmen I would continue meeting my contractual responsibilities until we reached an agreement. She sent the documents that afternoon, including the penalties and processing fees, without adding advice about our relationship.

The financial picture was worse than I had hoped. We were paying more for the townhouse than either of us would have chosen alone, mostly because Lauren had loved the light in the living room and the kitchen that opened onto the dining area. I had liked the attached garage and short commute. We could afford the house together without difficulty. Alone, Lauren would need to change her budget significantly, and I knew she would regard that consequence as something I had done to her rather than the result of a shared arrangement that no longer made sense.
