Through mutual friends, I heard that Chris was spending more time with Lauren. He had helped her carry boxes, taken her out for coffee, and accompanied her to a gathering where some guests had expected me to attend. I imagined those moments differently depending on how tired I was. Sometimes, I wondered if he had wanted the relationship to end. Other times, I wondered if he was simply doing what an old friend should do when someone was upset. I reminded myself that guessing would not change the reasons I left.

A mutual friend sent me a photograph Lauren had posted of two coffee cups on a dashboard. Chris's hand was visible on the steering wheel. The caption was an inside joke about loyal people showing up. I felt the old instinct to measure what it meant, whether she was sending a message, and whether everyone else would interpret it as a new relationship. I deleted the screenshot from my phone because I did not need to become a detective of someone else's captions.

That did not mean the timing escaped notice. Tessa later told me that people had begun asking whether Chris was the same friend Lauren had planned to travel with. Some were merely curious. Others thought the photographs made Lauren's earlier public accusations seem incomplete. A comment asking about the trip vanished from one of her posts, and a few friends started discussing the situation privately rather than responding enthusiastically online. I heard about those conversations secondhand and could not know exactly what was said.

I did know that Lauren's first account of our breakup was missing important context. In one version, she told people I left after a stressful week at work. In another, I had been frightened of marriage. In a third, she said I suddenly decided she could not have male friends. Each version contained a fragment someone might recognize, but none described the actual argument we had. I did not feel compelled to correct every variation, partly because doing so would keep me trapped in a dispute I had already chosen to leave.

The first bridesmaid to step back was Lauren's friend Maya. She had been helping coordinate travel for the wedding party and was frustrated to discover that the celebration had been canceled before Lauren told her directly. According to Tessa, Maya said she could not keep organizing events while receiving contradictory explanations about what was happening. She returned some decorations she had purchased and asked to be removed from a group chat. It was not a public denunciation, just a person choosing not to participate in more confusion.

Another bridesmaid withdrew a week later. I did not know whether her decision was related to the trip, the financial questions, or the tension inside the group. I only knew because the vendor coordinator forwarded an updated contact list. It struck me that I was still receiving information about a bridal party for a wedding that no longer existed. I replied that the list was no longer needed and asked for confirmation that the booking had been closed. Then I removed the old event reminder from my phone.
