When I first heard, I felt a flash of anger. We could have discussed a different plan before she posted about me. We could have taken the trip off the table temporarily and talked about why each of us felt threatened by the other's position. Instead, the issue had become a public stand she no longer seemed eager to make once its consequences were visible. That interpretation might have been unfair to Lauren, because I did not know her private reasons, but it was the feeling that arrived before my more careful thoughts did.

I told Tessa I hoped Lauren was doing all right and asked her not to keep me informed about the trip. Tessa hesitated, then said she thought we might still be able to fix things if someone persuaded us to sit down. I thanked her for caring. I told her that a single conversation would not repair a pattern that both people had avoided for years, especially when one of us no longer wanted to marry. She said she understood, though I could tell she wished the answer were different.

Chris remained around Lauren, but his visible role shifted. He stopped appearing in every photograph she posted, or perhaps she simply stopped posting as many photographs. I heard that he helped her look at apartments and that they were still in regular contact. Some mutual friends made knowing remarks about the timing and called him a replacement boyfriend. I refused to repeat those remarks. I had resented having my private life turned into material for other people's amusement, and I did not want to do the same thing to Lauren.

That was harder than it sounds. A cheap joke can feel like a way to recover dignity when you have been publicly mocked. I had several opportunities to make one. Once, at a dinner with Owen and two other friends, someone asked whether Chris would finally get his own wedding invitation. The table fell quiet after a few uncomfortable laughs. I said I did not know what was happening between them and that the joke was not helping me move on.

No one argued. We changed the subject to a football game, and afterward Owen thanked me for saying something. I realized I had spent months criticizing Lauren for treating private matters as entertainment while secretly imagining the relief of doing it back. Resisting the temptation did not make me morally superior. It simply meant I was trying not to recreate the exact behavior that had broken my trust.

Lauren's posts changed as the month went on. The statements about refusing to be controlled gave way to quotations about abandonment and the difficulty of starting over. People still responded with encouragement, but the comment sections grew smaller. Some friends remained firmly supportive of her, as friends often do when someone is hurting. Others stopped participating in the public discussions. It was not a dramatic uprising against her; it was the gradual exhaustion of people who could not solve a problem by leaving another sympathetic comment.
