“I know.”

“This is your house too.”

“I know.”

“Then stay.”

“No.”

She stood in the bedroom doorway while I put clothes into a duffel.

“Where are you going?”

“My brother’s.”

“Does Daniel know?”

“No.”

“You’re going to wake him in the middle of the night?”

“Yes.”

She sat on the edge of our bed.

“Are you really filing?”

I stopped packing.

“You told me to divorce you for years.”

“James.”

“Tonight I finally believed you.”

“I didn’t mean it.”

“That’s the problem.”

She looked up.

“What?”

“You were willing to threaten the end of our marriage because you were certain I would never accept.”

“You didn’t mean divorce.”

“You meant obedience.”

She began crying again.

I zipped the bag.

At the bedroom door, she grabbed my hand.

I stopped.

“Please don’t decide tonight.”

“I decided before tonight.”

Her grip loosened.

“What?”

That was when I told her about Rebecca.

About Marcus.

About the three weeks of preparation.

Not every detail.

Enough.

Melissa stared at me.

“You were planning to leave while acting normal?”

“Yes.”

“That’s deceptive.”

The word was almost impressive.

I looked at her.

“You’re right.”

She seemed surprised.

“I should have confronted you sooner.”

“I should have stopped hoping you’d tell me the truth without being cornered.”

“That part is mine.”

“But preparing for a separation after discovering an affair is not the same as maintaining one.”

She had no answer.

I went downstairs.

My wedding ring still sat beside the door.

Melissa stopped several feet behind me.

I picked it up.

For one second, I thought she believed I might put it back on.

Instead, I placed it inside the small zippered pocket of my overnight bag.

Not because I wanted it.

Because it belonged to me, and I no longer wanted symbolic objects deciding conversations.

I left.

My younger brother Daniel answered his door wearing shorts, one sock, and an expression of complete confusion.

He looked at the bag.

Then my face.

“Melissa?”

I nodded.

He moved aside.

“Come in.”

He did not ask for details immediately.

That helped.

He made coffee.

Terrible coffee.

At 2:15, sitting in his kitchen, I told him enough.

When I mentioned Adrian’s previous marriage to Melissa, Daniel stopped me.

“Wait.”

“She was married before you?”

“Yes.”

“You never knew?”

“No.”

“And now she’s sleeping with him again?”

“Yes.”

Daniel leaned backward.

“Man.”

That was all.

Some situations defeat language.

I slept approximately forty minutes.

The next morning, my phone contained thirty-eight messages.

Most were from Melissa.

Please come home.

We need to talk.
