Held it up.

She looked away.

“That could mean anything.”

“You entered the Calder together.”

Her face tightened.

“How do you know?”

“I know.”

“You invaded my privacy.”

“You used our joint card at the same hotel repeatedly.”

“That doesn’t give you the right—”

“Were you married to him?”

Silence.

It was astonishing.

A woman who always had an answer suddenly had none.

I repeated the question.

“Were you married to Adrian Cole?”

Melissa’s face lost color.

“Who told you?”

That was an answer.

I felt something inside me go still.

“You were.”

“It was a mistake.”

“You were married.”

“For fourteen months.”

“And you never told me.”

“It didn’t matter.”

I laughed once.

The sound surprised me.

“My wife having a previous husband doesn’t matter?”

“It was before you.”

“You told me he was a college boyfriend.”

“He was.”

“He was your husband.”

“For barely a year.”

“That is usually how marriage works. It still counts while it’s happening.”

Melissa set her purse down.

“This is exactly why I never told you.”

I stared at her.

“Because I would notice you were married?”

“No. Because you make things bigger than they are.”

There it was.

Even now.

My fault for reacting to reality.

I walked toward the kitchen.

Melissa followed.

“James.”

I turned on the lights.

The house looked absurdly ordinary.

Coffee mugs drying beside the sink.

A grocery list stuck to the refrigerator.

Mail on the island.

The life we had built sitting around us while she explained why her first marriage had been too unimportant to mention.

“What happened with Adrian?”

I asked.

Melissa crossed her arms.

“It ended.”

“I understand what divorce means.”

She glared at me.

“He was irresponsible.”

“He cheated.”

That surprised me.

“What?”

Melissa looked away.

“He cheated on me.”

The room changed.

“Adrian cheated on you?”

“Yes.”

“And now you’re meeting him at hotels?”

“It’s complicated.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“For once, I think it’s actually very simple.”

“You don’t know what happened.”

“Then tell me.”

She hesitated.

I waited.

That was another change.

The old James filled silence.

He apologized.

Explained.

Negotiated.

The man standing in the kitchen that night had learned to let silence do its job.

Eventually, Melissa sat at the island.

“Adrian contacted me eight months ago.”

“How?”

“LinkedIn.”

Of course.

“He said he was back in Austin.”

“And?”

“We talked.”
