"Neither does extortion."

Crane leaned closer. "Be very careful with words you cannot prove."

Emily held his gaze. "Get off my property."

He left.

The envelope remained on the truck until dark.

Emily carried it into the shelter without opening it.

At eleven forty-three that night, after hours of staring at the number Hawk had given her, she finally dialed.

It rang six times.

A rough male voice answered. "Yeah?"

Emily nearly hung up.

"Hello. I am sorry. My name is Emily Carter. Michael Reynolds gave me this number."

The line changed instantly.

"Emily Carter from Willow Creek?"

She sat straighter. "Yes."

"Hold on. Do not hang up."

Voices erupted in the background. A chair scraped. Footsteps moved away, then closer.

A familiar voice came on.

"Emily?"

She closed her eyes.

"Hawk."

"What happened?"

That was all it took.

Three weeks of stubbornness collapsed at once. Emily told him about Puit, the denied claim, Crane, the low offer, the bank deadline, the other families, the corporate filings, and the envelope beside her. She expected questions. She expected skepticism about the connections she had found.

Hawk listened without interrupting.

When she finished, there was a long silence.

"Say something," Emily whispered.

"I am thinking."

"I probably sound crazy."

"No. You sound like somebody who found a pattern and does not yet know how big it is."

Emily pressed her fingertips to her forehead. "Crane's offer expires at five tomorrow."

"Do not sign it."

"Hawk, the bank—"

"Do not sign it."

"You have no idea what is in it."

"Neither do you. That alone is enough reason not to sign under a deadline."

Emily looked at the envelope.

"I do not know what else to do."

Hawk's voice softened. "First, breathe. Second, sleep if you can. Third, in the morning you photograph every page of every record you found and make copies somewhere off that property."

"Why?"

"Because if this is real, evidence matters more than anger."

Emily heard someone in the background say something about a CPA.

Hawk covered the receiver briefly, answered the person, then returned. "I know people who can look at corporate structures better than either of us. One of our members spent twenty-five years doing forensic accounting before he retired. Another is an insurance defense lawyer who will know what is normal and what is not."

"You have an insurance lawyer in the club?"
