"You saved them. Too late."
The first anniversary of the tornado arrived under a cloudless sky.
Emily woke before dawn anyway.
Some dates lived in the body before the calendar.
She made coffee, went downstairs, and opened the shelter hatch.
The underground room looked almost exactly as it had the night of the storm, except for one addition.
A small brass plaque on the wall listed twenty-eight names.
Emily Carter.
Michael "Hawk" Reynolds.
Jake Moreno.
Deacon Price.
Marcus Bell.
Sadi Mercer.
Preacher Collins.
And the rest of the riders who had crowded into that space.
At the bottom were Daniel Carter's dates of birth and death, followed by one line:
HE BUILT THE DOOR THAT HELD.
Emily sat on the bench.
A few minutes later, Hawk climbed down with two cups of coffee.
"Figured I would find you here."
"You usually do."
He handed her a cup.
They sat in silence.
"I still hear it sometimes," Emily said. "The roof going."
"I still hear you screaming at us to move."
"I was very polite."
"You threatened to drag Deacon by his beard."
"He was blocking the ladder."
Hawk laughed softly.
After a while, Emily said, "I used to think the storm was the moment everything went wrong."
"And now?"
"Now I think it was the moment everything stopped pretending to be permanent. The shop. My grief. My idea that being alone was safer. Even what I thought about people I had never met."
Hawk looked around the shelter.
"Tornado is a harsh teacher."
"Terrible bedside manner."
They finished the coffee.
Upstairs, life began moving.
Jake arrived for work at eight and complained that Emily gave him the hardest jobs because she enjoyed power. She told him power had nothing to do with it; he simply needed practice. Mrs. Dawson stopped at the center with donated blankets. Sheriff Whitfield brought forms for the annual severe-weather drill.
A family traveling from Amarillo pulled in with a failed water pump and two crying children.
Emily diagnosed the problem.
Hawk entertained the kids by showing them how a motorcycle helmet visor worked.
Nothing historic happened.
