“No.”

“You think this company owes you something?”

“Yes.”

Grant actually laughed.

“Of course.”

Evan continued:

“It owes me what we agreed it would pay for work already performed.”

Dana looked down at her legal pad.

Grant said:

“You’re suspended effective end of day pending review of your conduct.”

This time Dana looked up sharply.

“Grant.”

“What?”

“I’ll need the basis documented.”

“Disruption. Misuse of company information. Potential solicitation.”

Evan looked at Dana.

“What company information did I misuse?”

Grant answered instead.

“This meeting is over.”

Evan stood.

He took no settlement papers.

He made no threat.

He simply returned to the calibration bay.

Mara saw him.

“What happened?”

“Suspended at four.”

Her eyes widened.

“For what?”

“Still being determined.”

“Evan.”

He put on his safety glasses.

“I have two units open.”

“You’re going to finish them?”

“Yes.”

At 3:43, he finished the first.

At 3:51, the second.

He recorded both lot numbers.

Cleaned the bench.

Returned borrowed fittings.

Logged out.

At four, he put on his coat.

Thirty-one employees already knew something had happened.

Nobody stopped him.

Curtis stood near the shipping door.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”
