Senior Quality and Compliance Specialist.
Evan initially believed the title sounded larger than the job.
Then he read the authority attached.
He could place a temporary hold on shipments, process changes, quality releases, and certain compliance-sensitive administrative actions pending independent verification.
A stop-work mechanism.
Written.
Formal.
Escalation directly to the audit committee if management overrode him.
The salary increase mattered.
Sophie’s braces mattered.
The car transmission mattered.
The mortgage mattered.
The new salary changed December arithmetic in the Ror household.
But Evan spent more time reading the escalation language than the compensation page.
Andrea noticed.
“That’s the part you care about?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because a title without authority is decoration.”
She nodded.
“That’s what I thought.”
Evan accepted.
He did not receive an office.
He did not want one.
His desk moved closer to the quality lab.
He still spent part of every day near calibration.
The younger technicians still called him when readings looked technically clean and practically wrong.
Only now, when Evan said:
“Hold the lot.”
The lot stopped.
No executive needed to laugh first.
Leonard Beckett called him in February.
Sophie answered.
“Dad, some guy named Leonard says he owns Becket.”
Evan took the phone.
“Leonard?”
“I’ve been thinking.”
“That usually gets expensive.”
Leonard laughed.
“Probably.”
He explained that Becket was under no legal obligation to honor the expired corporate certificates.
The contract was clear.
Expiration was valid.
Blackidge had created the misuse, not Becket.
“But my father’s name is on that paper.”
Evan remained quiet.
