"A little knowledge can make a man reckless," Silas warned him one evening. Jonah said he knew the risks, and his grandfather asked him to name them. The boy mentioned leakage, distortion, hidden branching cracks, and the possibility that the surrounding structure would be too weak to trust after repair. Silas listened, then added the risk Jonah had not named: believing the family needed the repair so badly that he would accept evidence he would reject on somebody else's machine.

That warning mattered when Jonah made a new practice attempt on a transmission housing with a complicated fracture around a bolt boss. He wanted to prove to himself that he could map more than one stress path, but inspection revealed that a previous owner had already tried to repair the part with rough drilling that removed too much sound material. Jonah spent an hour considering whether a different pattern could rescue it. In the end he set the tool down and wrote in his notebook that the remaining structure did not justify the attempt.

Silas was sitting by the stove when Jonah carried the rejected housing to the separate shelf. "You didn't waste the afternoon," he said. Jonah replied that it felt like he had, because he had done nothing that made a machine work again. Silas pointed to the notebook and asked whether the evidence he had recorded could prevent somebody from trusting the damaged part later. When Jonah said yes, his grandfather told him to count that as useful work.

The next afternoon, a neighbor named Harold Benton stopped at the farm to borrow a trailer hitch. He was a tall, quiet man with deep creases around his eyes and a habit of studying the weather even while talking about something else. He noticed the International in the shed and asked Dale whether it was giving him trouble again. Dale admitted there was a crack in the block, and Harold said he hoped they could find a replacement before the ground dried enough to plant.

Jonah was carrying a notebook past the doorway when Harold turned to him. "You're the one bringing all that scrap home from Earl's place, aren't you?" he asked. Jonah nodded, expecting another joke. Harold looked toward the repair shop and said his father had once repaired a cracked pump housing rather than throw away a perfectly good irrigation system.
