the surrounding iron to a damaging welding cycle. Jonah occasionally stepped away to inspect the work from a distance, trying to see it as Silas would rather than as the boy who had been concentrating on one small area for hours. It was growing into a repair he could be proud of, but he refused to let himself call it finished.
Dale returned with a thermos of coffee and found the two of them still at the bench. Silas had removed his glasses and was rubbing his eyes, while Jonah was comparing the latest measurements with the drawing taped to the wall. Dale looked from father to son and said they had both done enough for one day. Jonah wanted to continue, but Silas agreed with Dale and insisted that tired hands were not an acceptable reason to hurry a repair on an expensive block.
They covered the casting and went into the farmhouse. At supper Dale talked about weather, seed delivery, and a neighbor whose planter had developed a hydraulic problem, trying to make the evening feel ordinary. Jonah answered when spoken to but kept thinking about the unfinished work. Silas noticed and told him that an engine block would still be there in the morning, which was more than could be said for clear judgment after midnight.
Jonah lay awake for a long time. He thought about the farmers laughing outside Earl's office and how easy it would be to turn a successful repair into a chance to prove them wrong. Then he thought about Dale's financing papers, and the satisfaction turned to something heavier. He did not need the town to admit he was clever; he needed the tractor to carry its load without failing in the field.
The second day began with a clear sky and cool air that made the shop windows bright. Jonah finished the sections he had left the night before, then worked with Silas to check the entire repair rather than only the last part completed. They looked for distortion, incomplete seating, and signs that new stress had appeared beyond the original crack map. One area required additional finishing before it met their standards, so Jonah redid that portion without complaint.
